It might be a record for a headliner in concert, but it’s not a record for the cheapest seats to a major Las Vegas event.
On May 2, 2015, the blockbuster Floyd Mayweather and Manny Pacquiao championship boxing match took place at MGM Grand Arena.
The ticket situation was strange.
They didn’t go on sale until April 23, less than two weeks before the bout, as Top Rank (Pacquiao’s promoter), Mayweather Promotions, and the MGM Grand squabbled over ticket allotments.
Then, only 1,000 or so tickets were made available to the public via Ticketmaster—despite the MGM Garden Arena’s a capacity of 16,500. The other 15,500 seats went to the fighters, sponsors, and promoters.
From most to least, the tickets cost $7,500, $5,000, $3,500, $2,500, and $1,500 -- the least expensive still 50% more than than Lady Gaga’s $1,000.
