Question of the Day - 10 March 2017

Q:
Are there special rooms at "pet-friendly" hotels or do you get whatever room is handed out?
A:

As always, it depends on the hotel, but things have changed since LVA last surveyed pet-friendly hotels.

For instance, pets are no longer welcome at Boulder Station, Sunset Station, or Green Valley Ranch. However, Station’s Days Inn at Wild Wild West estimates that as many as 75% of its rooms are pet friendly.

A few hotels allow you to bring your pet (although "pet" is often a euphemism that is spelled "d-o-g") into any room. This honor roll includes Artisan Hotel, Candlewood Suites, Residence Inn Convention Center, Vdara, and Westin Lake Las Vegas. The Westin, which has two pet-friendly floors, says it tries to keep the rooms close to the elevator banks and outdoor pet-exercise area. Similarly, Four Seasons doesn’t have a specific floor or number of rooms, but it does welcome pets — preferably close to the elevator.

Most hotels that accept pets do so on a limited-rooms basis. Getting a straight answer out of Caesars Entertainment was a frustrating process, made more so by the company’s snail-powered customer service (being on hold for 15 minutes or more wasn’t unusual). A couple of Caesars properties hid behind the cryptic phrase "depending on availability" to describe their pet policy, which defied several attempts to get a clear answer. (It sounded suspiciously like "whatever room is handed out," but don’t quote us on that.)

What we were able to glean is that Caesars-owned hotels (Bally’s, Flamingo Las Vegas, Caesars Palace, Harrah’s, Line, Paris-Las Vegas, Planet Hollywood, The Rio) have a limited number of pet-friendly rooms, but that it’s company policy not to disclose the number. The most specificity we were able to glean was that they’re in the Augustus Tower at Caesars and confined to the fifth floor at Paris.

Element, out near Red Rock Canyon, allows pets in its first-floor units.

Affinity Gaming has backslid at its Primm Valley Resorts. Pets are no longer welcome at the namesake casino nor at Whiskey Pete’s, but you and Spot can stay on the first floor of Buffalo Bill’s.

Boyd Gaming has one pet-friendly casino, Aliante, where dogs under 20 pounds are allowed in any guest room (with a $100 non-refundable fee).

MGM Resorts International doesn’t allow pets at Mandalay Bay, but you can book an animal into a "limited number of king and queen suites" at sister property Delano.

Several hotels have simply fallen off the map. Rumor is closed, as Vagabond Inn appears to be. Super 8 at Ellis Island Casino is still very much in business, but won’t host your pet anymore (however, Ellis Island will drop the Super 8 flag in May.)

Extended Stay Flamingo has 14 pet-friendly rooms, Hoover Dam Lodge "about 12," and Trump International 10.

Note that hotel pet policies do not apply to service animals. Hotels are expected to comply with Title III regulations of the Americans with Disabilities Act, which require public accommodations to permit the use of service animals by individuals with disabilities. The animals can’t be isolated, restricted to certain guest rooms, or barred from areas where other guests are allowed to go.
