Question of the Day - 21 March 2017

Q:
We interrupt our regularly scheduled programming for this special announcement.
A:

Finally and without further ado, heeeeeeere's the new LasVegasAdvisor.com!

It might not appear so at first glance, but this is a major milestone in the evolution of the business Anthony Curtis started in 1982 (when he was 25 years old) and has been covering Las Vegas ever since -- nearly 35 years.

Though the monthly newsletter went through some early incarnations, beginning in April 1992, it was expanded to 12 pages and has kept the same basic format (and price!) ever since. From then until now, we've published more than 3,600 pages on every aspect of the scene in our city.

Question of the Day was introduced on May 15, 2004. From then until now, we've posted the answers to more than 4,500 readers' questions.

Today's News was launched on August 24, 2006. We can't count that high, but over the past 10-plus years at 3-8 per day, that's between 11,000 and 30,000 news entries.

And that doesn't even include thousands more pages -- blogs, listings (hotels, casinos, restaurants, shows and events, nightlife venues, things to do, etc.), our new FAQ section, and all of our gambling information, not to mention deals, discounts, and promotions, our forums and message boards, and special features.

In short, this website is the world's largest online source of information about Las Vegas. There isn't even a close second.

Our problem has always been that those decades' worth of content has, basically, run wild; there wasn't any way to harness it all.

Until now.

It took the better part of five years to launch the new LasVegasAdvisor.com. But we persevered in order to bring all this information to you.

Other than the newsletter itself, every page on this site is accessible. No memberships, no premiums, no restricted spaces — we've opened up the QoD archive, the forums, all the listings, every binary bit of information.

What's more, it's all searchable. Search functions are available for the Question of the Day and Today's News archives, as well as a global function that searches the whole site. Also, Advanced Searches allow you to filter each category in all kinds of ways.

Be sure to click on the More buttons at the bottom of all the landing pages -- some categories have multiple pages of listings.

Also, we've enabled the comments function on every page. Now you can comment directly on QoD, without having to send an email and have it posted by us -- as well as on all the other pages.

And to get back to the home page, simply click on the Anthony Curtis' Las Vegas Advisor banner on top of any page.

It's all yours! Go nuts!

Oh, and let us know how you like the site. If you find a bug or a glitch, if something you liked on the old site isn't on the new, if you think the new site is the best thing since sliced bread, we're all ears!

This is one of the fetures I liked the best.

    McKee and daily info
You can access Stiff and Georges and Jean Scott's blog at the bottom of the home page. It's under Popular Features, one of the six sliding panels. Just click on Blogs, then Stiffs and Georges. By daily info, do you mean Today's News? That's on the home page, mid-right.

    Background
I HATE the white background. It is burning my retinas! Please consider another color.
    Thanks!

    Free for all?
The forum. Where is it now?

  • Robin Heller Mar-21-2017
    Heh?
How do you access the home page? And where did Bob Dancer's column go? Not sure that I love this re-design...it's very twitchy!

  • Leonard Accardi Mar-21-2017
    WOW
If everything in the description of the new site is true, it is a much more comprehensive improvement than I expected. Although, as usual, the car rental ads make outrageous claims that are no where near the actual rental prices.

    Forums and Dancer
To access the forums, go to the LVA homepage (from the top of any page on the site, click on the Anthony Curtis' Las Vegas Advisor banner to return to the homepage), hover over Member Benefits on the top navigation bar for the drop-down menu; Forums is the bottom entry. Bob Dancer's column now appears at our Gambling with an Edge sister site, which you can bookmark to go direct or access from the Casinos/Gambling drop-down on the top nav or from the Popular Features panels at the bottom of the homepage.

Sorry to say I liked the old one better, I guess the choice will be like or leave!

    like or leave
Actually, there's at least a third choice: Give it a chance. The new site's been up for a few hours; maybe it'll grow on you. It's the same information after all, just presented a little differently.

  • Maggie Mar-21-2017
    Giving it a chance, but...
The ads (!) cover the content. There is too much white space. Are you going to offer an ad free version for a reasonable fee?

    Where should we post feedback?
I see that several people have posted feedback on this page, but I've posted two clumps of feedback here:

    https://www.lasvegasadvisor.com/new-at-lva/

and I hope that won't be overlooked by the tech folks at LVA.

As I noted in the second round of feedback, I'm seeing serious usability issues on both my phone and tablet. Perhaps my situation is unique but I suspect it is not. The new site is essentially not usable now with my mobile devices (phone & tablet, Android 6.x, Chrome browser) because much of the information is not reachable (there are no graphic elements to click on or links to much of the stuff that I do see on my desktop PC).

    ad blocking
Mrs. Fine -- Yes, we might offer ad blocking. Videopoker.com charges $2.95 a month and $25 per year for it. Would you say that's a reasonable fee? Or perhaps a small upcharge on an LVA membership?

  • Deke Castleman Mar-21-2017
    comments
Steve -- We're not overlooking anything, especially not today! All the comments are emailed to us; they're all also aggregated in one place in the back of the house. Six of us are trying to keep up with all the feedback and I'm sure we'll still be way after hours (and tomorrow's another day). Trying to please all the people all the time is, perforce, a work in progress.

    Fee
    Mr. Castleman,

I wouldn't pay $25 a year for ad blocking but I think a small upcharge for LVA membership would be OK. Small as in $5 or $10. Maybe you could add it as a coupon in the next version of the LVA member rewards.😉

I'm still having some issues with the ads literally blocking content on the site. It seems somewhat better today and hopefully will keep improving.

I appreciate all the great information available on LVA no matter what form it is in.
