Question of the Day - 30 April 2017

Q:

What is the name of the majestic peak north of Lake Las Vegas? Is there a trail to the summit?

A:

That’s Muddy Peak, the highest point in the Muddy Mountains, which stretch to the northeast of Lake Mead and hem in Valley of Fire to the west.

The Muddy Mountains preside over a folded and faulted topography, in which an upthrust of older gray limestone sits atop multi-colored Aztec sandstone.

A 600-foot-deep slot canyon, Anniversary Narrows, runs through the part of the range.

Congress set aside the Muddy Mountains in a 48,154-acre wilderness area in 2002, managed by the Bureau of Land Management and the National Park Service.

There’s no trail to the top of Muddy Peak, but rough roads enter the area and provide access from Northshore and Callville Wash Roads and Bitter Springs Backcountry Byway to the three most popular parts of the wilderness area: Anniversary Narrows, Hidden Valley, and Bowl of Fire. Four-wheel-drive high-clearance vehicles are a necessity in this country.
