Question of the Day - 10 May 2017

Q:

New Reader Poll

A:

This poll was suggested by a reader who wrote, "Having only started going to Las Vegas in 1995, I sure would have liked being there during the Rat Pack Era." The question: What was your favorite era/decade in Las Vegas history? You can select as many choices as you like and we'd love to hear about when you first came to Vegas and whether or not that's your favorite era. The date designations might, perhaps, be a bit arbitrary and overlapping, but they do encompass what we consider particular "eras."

Tough choice. As a history buff and a kid who was enamored with Dean Martin, et al, I would have LOVED to visit Vegas in the Sixties "mob heyday". But I chose the 1990's era, where "medium-rollers" were treated like "high rollers". Carl Icahn's redevelopment of the Stratosphere let us live like rock stars, and ANYWHERE we stayed on the strip and gambled gave great comps. The ONLY reason now we go to Vegas is for business; all the fees add up to a killer for gambling, so we do it in other cities and areas.

    First Visit
Would be hard to forget the first visit to Las Vegas ... was able to go on my "employer's dime" ... stayed at the Sahara, hosting a group of clients. Lots of highlights for sure --- Isaac Hayes was the headliner in the Congo Room and the show "continued thru the night with bongo drums pounding" as our group ended up on the same floor with the entertainers. Noisy and even a bit annoying, but being "entertained" into the early hours of the morning was special. Remember borrowing $50 from an older gentlemen in the group, won $100, paid my "debt" and felt like I'd won a million.
Wanted to eat in the House of Lords but it was wayyyyyyyy to expensive, that had to wait until years later on another trip.
Seeing all the lights, dreaming of running into big STARS, cheap eats in the morning and gourmet rooms at night, looking for HIGH ROLLERS late into the nights ... what fun and excitement. Even attended major boxing matches, Jerry Lewis' 24 hour Fund Raiser and Frank Sinatra arrive.

    Las Vegas" Best Era 1968-1989
Been going to Las Vegas since 1963: The 68-89 era was the best, great entertainment, food, rooms, at very affordable prices. Lots of freebies, from fun books to hats and hip packs. Stardust and Westward-Ho great multiday slot tournaments with rooms, meals, prize dinners. Lots of fun for your money. Doubt if we will ever see that again - the bean counters are running the show now.
