Question of the Day - 02 August 2017

Q:

New Reader Poll: How do you get psyched up for a trip to Las Vegas?

A:

This poll was suggested by a reader of Simplifying Las Vegas 2017, an e-guidebook to Las Vegas by Mike Attisano, an old friend of LVA who’s been writing about Vegas for more than a decade.

About a month ago, we answered a QoD with an excerpt from his book, which a correspondent bought (it’s available on Kindle and Nook for $4.99), found a cool section called “Getting Pumped,” put it together with our previous poll about only-in-Vegas indulgences, and sent in the idea for a survey on how you get psyched up for your trip to Sin City.

You can select as many choices as you like (and thanks go to Mike Attisano for a number of them) and as always, we love comments and we suspect you do too; we got dozens of great ones on the last poll.

    reason for going
I never go to Las Vegas for things I can do at home. So watch out.

    March Madness

    Map and coupons!
I start planning a color scheme for my clothes so I can mix and match (red/white/blue or black/white/beige, etc.) My husband just tells me how many shirts and how many jeans he'll need. Review the LVA coupon book, reread the most recent LVA issues and highlight articles, and see if I'll need to stop at a bookstore and buy an updated street-by-street map, as we always get and car and I'm the navigator. By the time we board the plane, the flight has long since been paid for, room has been comped, car has been reserved and rechecked for the lowest price, money has been saved up, and LVA, coupon book, and maps have been packed. Always take an extra day's worth of money, medications, and underwear, cuz you never know!

I love the food in Vegas, going there allows me to go off my (ongoing) diet.

I go to tripadvisor and find the best "value" restaurants, both free-sanding and in casinos for Breakfast, Lunch, etc.

combine that with any coupons in the LVA book, and pretty much have an outline of where we can go. once in LV we usually decide exactly where to go to eat early every day.

I put key restaurants and attractions into my GPS before the trip so we can get going right out of the car rental at the airport. Want to make the most of the time there

    Prepping for a visit
We always go back through our copies of the LVA newsletter and the MRB to organize our trip and maximize taking advantage of the benefits of our membership. If we haven't already bought show tix, then I'll check out what's available on StubHub. We make sure we have enough "seed" money to start gambling before we get our marker, and if time permits, we'll practice rolling dice! Thanks for all the good info you put out!

    2 X a year!
I meet a friend over there twice a year (sometimes more) She drives and I fly going over, then she drives me home. I TRY to pack light because I can buy anything I want over there. However, I ALWAYS take a jacket because the air conditioning can be brutal. We have comped rooms thanks to B---Properties and use Las Vegas Advisor coupon book for most meals. I don't drink so I don't have to practice that, but I do practice Video Poker on my computer. I also Read over one of Jean Scott's books again and check out the most recent Las Vegas Advisor issue (especially for weather). I make certain I have all my money in my carry-on bag, any medications I take, my coupon book, my plane ticket and off I go. If the baggage gets lost the heck with it I've got everything I need right with me. I ALWAYS have great time!

    Anticipation!
Planning usually starts a couple of weeks in advance by booking spa treatments and having my host book dinner reservations and a cabana during pool season. If we're meeting friends there, planning might include booking a show or visiting the strip. If I'm playing a tournament, I'll review strategy the week before. Heading to Vegas this Friday and bringing a bunch of friends so I'm listening to my Vegas music and consulting the Vegas packing list!
