Question of the Day - 23 October 2020

Q:

The American Casino Guide has announced that because of COVID, there will be no 2021 Guide. Will there be a 2021 MRB? Will it be the "best ever"? AND: American Casino Guide announced Tuesday that it will not publish a 2021 coupon book and is asking casinos to honor the 2020 book through next year. Do you foresee a similar situation unfolding for the Las Vegas Advisor?

AND

Given the efforts a certain other high-profile Las Vegas coupon purveyor (who shall remain nameless) has made to convince casinos to extend coupons from their 2020 book into 2021, has LVA made similar outreach to the casinos? If so, are there any developments? Any information you can provide would be greatly appreciated.

A:
These are just a couple of the frequent questions we're fielding about next year's coupon package. We receive these queries from anxious members every year at this time to a certain extent, but we're sure we don't need to say that this year is unique in everyone's experience and that includes our premium program.

We can assure you we'll have a 2021 Member Rewards Book, but we're still in the early stages of the annual coupon quest and don't know at this time what it will look like and what changes there will be.

All we can say is it's a long process that doesn't end until the fat printer sings in mid-December.

As we do every year, we'll give you the details as soon as we have them.

    Coupon Run
I have been a member since 2000 and my friends since 2010. We have an annual trip in October and always take time to do a Downtown Coupon Run. This year we had 2 teams (2 players). Always profitable and fun even during the pandemic. The Matchplay Red/Black bet works at Plaza, Golden Gate, and the D but may not work at the Downtown Grand. For the free slot play at Plaza, Golden Nugget, Binions, we play the minimum vp poker hands and between one of the teams we usually hit at least one big hand. LVA keep up the good work! FYI we also spend a day at Ellis Island using all the coupons available....

    Rewards book
I was in Vegas over Labor Day weekend. After reviewing the book pretty thoroughly, between the closed casinos and buffets and shut down shows, I guesstimated approx 30% of the book couldn't be used. However, I still found it to be very useful. We all know distance wise it isn't possible to use every coupon during a single trip. It has a wide variety of choices for each user to pick and choose. For me, I made a trip downtown and used the free $10 slot play at Binions, 4 Queens, Plaza and El Cortez. I kept track each time to cash out once the $10 was played and in total got back around $37 - free money. Also used the $10 match play at Orleans and lost like $2.50. Since I stayed at South Point, also used the printed 2/1 breakfast buffet coupon saving $10. So even with limited use, between the free money return and savings, I put a value of around $45 for me on the coupon book. Almost paid for my membership and definitely a valuable perk.

    Palms
Assuming that the Palms is reopening at "full strength" I would hope that you can reinstate that coupon. It was the only coupon that I was sure to use every year. Meeting friends at the Palms for a meal with the half off up to $ 50 paid for my yearly subscription!

Love doing the LVA coupon run
Here're details of my coupon run last month. Bottom line was I got $138 free. I made $75 or so last year.

First was Four Queens. I used $10 free play and won a whopping $0.25.

Next was Golden Gate for a single hand of $25 match play BJ. I got a 12 against a 7. I hit, got an 8 for 20, dealer drew to a 17. Up $50.

Plaza for $10 free slot play and $25 match play. I won $0.82 on the slots. BJ I got a 14 against a 7. I hit and got an ace followed by a 7, so I busted and was up $25.

At the Grand I got a $20 match play for BJ. The dealer gave me two Qh that beat her 17 giving me a $40 and bringing me up to $65 profit. The dealer said if I'd put a buck on the side bet I’d have won $200 for the two Qh. Still a sucker bet.

At ElCo you get a random value between $10 and $1000 in free play, I got $10 and won four bits.

    The D gave me a BJ on a $25 match for a $62.50 payout.

I got $10 in free slot play at Binion's and won $11 for a grand total of $138.50.

The novel virus requires novel offers.
Savvy businesses adapt to new realities with new strategies rather than try to make the best of an old business plan that no longer is meeting the needs of its customers.

With that in mind, LVA should try to enlist CVS or Wallgreens in honoring new 2021 MRB coupons for deals on thermometers, aspirin, or other OTC medicines to treat those minor but annoying symptoms of mild cases of Covid that can put a crimp in a Vegas vacation even if one's Covid bug isn't life threatening or doesn't require hospitalization.

Coupons could be honored for free hand sanitizer or high quality masks at many different kinds of venues.

LVA could sell masks with its own logo or with comical catchphrases such as "I got the Covid and survived!" LOL!

How about a line pass to be used at temperature checkpoints at a given casino's entrance, because who wants to stand on line, especially during a raging pandemic?

It's time to think outside the box. 2 for 1 buffet or $5 match play coupons are so 2019.

MRB should be bigger and better
With all the lost business this year, I would think getting casinos to loosen up and give out some good deals for the MRB would be in order. Like others here, I did a coupon run downtown for the first time last year and it was a blast. Matchplays were profitable, but just the casino hopping to get all the deals was fun considering I haven't been to a lot of the downtown casinos in a long while.
