Question of the Day - 31 January 2022

Q:

In your QoD about upcoming events in 2022, you said that this year is just a kind of preview for all the big things happening in 2023. What's so big about 2023 in Las Vegas?

A:

Actually, what we wrote was, "Other than those (the Palms reopening and a few minor events), 2022 sets up Las Vegas for a number of major developments that kick in next year and beyond."

Next year, we're anticipating two big developments. MSG Sphere is opening and that will usher the entertainment scene here into a whole new dimension. Madison Square Garden has announced that it will develop other Spheres around the world; the next one has been proposed for the Stratford area of London. But Las Vegas’ Sphere will be the world’s first of its kind, a $2 billion 17,500-seat performing-arts arena that will be among the most technologically advanced entertainment venues in the world. Read about it in our previous QoD

In addition, the Fontainebleau is scheduled to open sometime in the fourth quarter of next year. When/if it does, it will bring to an end one of the longest hotel-development sagas in Las Vegas history. And it will certainly be interesting to see what the place turns out to be after 15 years in limbo.

Also in 2022, the Las Vegas Loop will expand to Resorts World and possibly start to dig south under the Strip.

In 2023, the big buildup to the 2024 Super Bowl will start late in the year.

In 2024, Dream Resort, the $500 million 20-story 500-room hotel-casino approved for south Strip next to the airport, is scheduled to open, most likely followed by the debut of the Majestic, the $850 million 720-room non-casino non-smoking hotel on Convention Center Drive.

Compared to the big-bam-boom days of the 1990s and early aughts, 2022 and beyond admittedly don't offer much of a lineup. But measured by the development doldrums since 2010, when the big events over more than a decade have been the grand openings of the Cosmopolitan, Circa, and Resorts World, some extra excitement is in store.

Fontainebleau . . . fourth quarter of next year
    Next year?
Or was this QoD written this past December?

  • VegasVic Jan-31-2022
    Fontainebleau
It's website states late 2023. Obviously with everything that's happened with that project we'll all believe it when we see it.

    Las Vegas needs new balls
Why settle for just one Sphere? Build two! Concerts. Sporting events. Gladiatorial games. Nude celebrity monster truck mud wrestling. The possibilities are endless.

Speaking of records, tickets to attend events at the Big Ball(s) will be the most expensive in Vegas history. And I'm sure that wherever you'll be able to park, it'll cost $30.

    Mashed Potato
"Nude celebrity monster truck mud wrestling"???
Now there's a sport I can get behind!
Although mashed potato wrestling seems a bit more over the top.

    Wow
I’m shocked MSG is going to build a second arena in Las Vegas with one already there considering the population. Will MSG be profitable without weekday attendance numbers from major sporting events?

  • VegasVic Jan-31-2022
    MSG
MSG isn't just for sporting events, it's also for concerts. And the second one is going to be in London. Vegas isn't getting 2.
