Question of the Day - 23 July 2026

Q:

If I’m playing craps in a Las Vegas casino, how do I tip “the boys?” Do I place a bet for them, maybe on the Line, or just throw a chip or two at them?

A:

The best way to tip craps dealers is to place a bet for them directly on the table, such as "two-way yo" or putting a chip on the Pass Line. This aligns your interests with the crew, giving them a fun reason to root for your rolls while you play.

There are generally two ways to tip dealers at any table game: toss them your tip in a chip or chips or place a bet for them directly on the table.

Just throw them some place bets up with your change or hardways for the dealers. You can always just throw in a couple bucks and tell them to drop it. It’s all appreciated. Nothing you need to think too hard about. Put them on the pass line for a buck with a couple dollars for odds, something like that. Gets the good Karma going. Doesn’t have to be every time you throw a bet down. Like you said they know if you’re having a bad run

Tipping throughout the game is the way to go. An easy thing to do/remember: every time you get your turn to roll. 1 on the pass line with at least 2 behind in odds for the dealers. Make the bet right next to yours. Easy to remember. The dealers appreciate the effort. Then you can toss in a session appropriate tip at the end when you leave. If you are going to play repeatedly at the same table the dealers will remember.

I follow the same practice, along with the random prop bet here and there "for the crew".

One thing though, at least where I've played in Vegas, you don't have to put anything on the pass line to make the odds wager for the crew. You can simply place the odds wager chips meant for them slightly offset on top of your own odds stack, or to the side of it (letting them know that's what you're doing, of course).

Same here. That is usually how I play it when I am the shooter and have to have a pass line. I have never been told the dealers have to have a passing pass line to place the odds for them.

That is an easy way to remember, but for myself I would just pick the person shooting next to me...don't want anything to mess up my mojo.

On a $10 table, it is very easy to take $1 or $2 after a hit on the inside and have the dealers add to your bets as a piggy back or player control. It creates a good interaction with the dealers as well as puts some skin in the game. Lastly, I have had a few times where tipping throughout my time of the table has helped my comps. Good luck.

Excellent point, tipping has been known to aide the comps

I’ll add a bet for the dealers on about 80% of my rolls. Hoping the karma comes back to me on a hot roll one day 😎

My tip strategy is as follows:

  1. Throw them $6 and say “six across for the dealers, player control”.

  2. As they’re placing the bet I then say “dealers, press $1 and collect the rest for each number that hits”

The words “player control” are crucial, because this means I dictate how the dealers play with those bets. Otherwise, if you just leave them with $6 across and don’t say “player control”, they’ll take down the bet on a number when it hits. Most casinos allow this, but I’ve run into one or two situations where the pit boss said it wasn’t allowed, which was strange.

This is my favorite tipping method for a few reasons:

  1. Dealers absolutely love it since it gets them involved in the game.

  2. If there’s a hot roll, the bets remain on the table and keep rising, adding more and more tips for the dealers.

  3. This allows you to “keep score” of how many times a place bet hits on each roll. Each hit on a number increases the bet by $1.

this is awesome, particularly so you can tell what numbers are trending

Every time I bet a hard way I bet it 2 way, winning or losing. That way I’m always trying to tip.

I always do a $25 pass line bet for the crew when I’m the shooter, it’s my ritual. I will also tip them throughout a long session, or when a point is hit. The dealers actually help you out and give friendly advice once you start tipping. They will remind you of any missed bets, or to start pressing once they see a run coming.

unless I'm completely out I'll toss at least a $5 chip at the dealers as I leave

I've read/heard some dealers appreciate bets for them as well so if I'm rolling good or I've been at the table for awhile on other folks' rolls I'll toss a "two-way" bet for both of us, usually a hard way or prop bet. I was at a really hot table once and hit a two-way yo $10, that was fun.

I give them $50 and tell them to put it $5 across and change on hard ways. I tell them it stays up. If its hot they keep getting paid. I'll see them press bets often as well.

I will throw a $5 chip for hard ways and tell the stick man the last one is for the dealers... Also will just place the point next to my pass line bet, or just place them with odds for a few dollars. I like to think of it as an, if I win, you win situation. I try to make it easy for them to win, they appreciate it.

I'll usually add $1 to a hardway bet and indicate player control so it stays up for the crew if it hits. Usually if I'm shooting also throw a buck on bonus craps and the fire bet.

I always put the dealers up with me on my place bets and pass line odds. I know that if I have the “I’ll tip at the end” mentality I won’t have any money to tip so Ive just made it a habit to put them up every time I bet a box number. I make sure to ask what I need to bet for them to stay up when they hit

After the second or third point made I will usually put a dollar on the line for dealers. Backing it up with shoes usually perks them up. If I do a $9 three way I’ll have them ride for one. The last thing I will do is if I’m at a casino that does put bets I’ll let them keep my come bet and odds work and let them keep the flat bet.

I tip when I enter the game and again when I leave - Usually table minimum when I enter and two times when I leave. More if a big run.
