Question of the Day - 22 January 2023

Q:

Last year (2022), there was massive hoopla that Las Vegas was approaching 1,000,000 marriages "within the coming months." Here it is 2023 and I have heard nothing but silence. Did the 1 millionth happen and I missed it? Is it still waiting to happen? And are/were there any "awards" going to the one millionth?

A:

You missed it. And it wasn't one million. It was five million.

In November 2021, the Clark County Marriage License Bureau predicted that it would issue its five-millionth marriage license sometime in mid-February. At the time, the county was averaging 6,000 licenses per month, which put it on a pace to issue the five-millionth a little after Valentine's Day 2022.

Valentine's Day came and went.

Then two things happened on 2/22/22, a "Twosday" no less. First, upwards of 3,400 couples received marriage licenses on the palindrome date. It didn't beat the record of around 4,500 wedding set on 7/7/07, but it did approach the second most popular date, 11/11/11, on which nearly 3,500 licenses were issued.

Second, it was announced that the five-millionth wedding license had been awarded the day before on February 21. It went to a couple from Patterson, California (in the central valley west of San Jose), culminating the ad campaign, "Five Million Love Stories." The lucky newlyweds received a two-night stay and spa package at Paris, a key to the Las Vegas Strip, an autographed metal print of a new Marriage License Bureau mural, and a custom diamond five-million-love-stories” ring from a local jeweler, among other Las Vegas-based prizes.

The bride exclaimed, “It means good things are coming!”

The groom told the Las Vegas Review-Journal, “I never win anything, so this is not only huge, it’s a great way to start off our life together.” Aww.

Valet used to be plum job
There was a story in the LV Review-Journal a few years ago about a young man with an MBA degree from UNLV that was working at Caesars Palace as a parking valet. He had started as a valet when he was a UNLV student. As a valet he made over $100k per year with tips, and when he got his degree the best job offer he got was $65k so he stayed being a valet. The reporter interviewing him checked with other valets working at different high-end properties and found the same situation. A valet can park or retrieve a car fairly fast, many customers give a $5 or more tip, so the tips really add up. They said the valet job was highly sought after. So some valets continued doing the job even after graduating from UNLV. How many cars could you park or retrieve per hour with tips that are $5+ per car? I've seen valets jogging quickly from the valet booth to park & retrieve cars, they can do many per hour, especially during an event where the traffic is constant. But I think that's changed now.
