Question of the Day - 19 March 2022

Q:

When it comes to 6-5 blackjack, do you think it will ever go away? Surely, the casinos can't get away with ripping off blackjack players forever. Can they?

A:

Forever's a long time. And though anything can happen, we can't predict why, when, or even if 6-5 might go away. However, if you held our feet to the flame, we'd bet that 6-5 blackjack, like resort fees, paid parking, triple-zero roulette, death, and taxes, isn't going away anytime soon.

In the first place, many, if not most, blackjack players don’t know the difference between 6-5 and 3-2. Indeed, Bally’s — one of the first casinos to deal the 6-5 game — advertised on its marquee that it was offered “by popular demand,” implying that because the 6 and 5 were bigger numbers than the 3 and 2, it was a better deal.

Which reminds us of a T-shirt we saw recently: Five out of four people don't understand fractions.

Secondly, 6-5 has become so common, especially at single- and double-deck games with low minimums, that a lot of players don't have a choice.

Obviously, it’s another one of those takebacks that has pretty much become the norm. Plenty of people play 7/5 Jacks or Better and 6/5 Bonus Poker now.

Here at QoD, we’re generally optimistic, with a positive outlook on the future and a deep belief that, thanks to evolution, things are continuously improving. But when it comes to the masses vis-à-vis casino games, it’s clear that ignorance and indifference constitute the rule and not the exception.

    6/5 Blackjack
I played it once years ago and won $45. That's before I knew what it was. Now I can say that I will always be a winner at this game. This was about 20 years ago. When did Bally's begin dealing it?

    First 6:5 on the Strip
    https://www.lasvegasadvisor.com/question/6-5-blackjack-history/

I found a link to a previous question. Flamingo in 1999. I played at this table. It was right inside the door and the cage was right behind it. $5 single deck. I was winning hands until they brought in a slick looking dealer with a lot of jewelry. I left after losing a few hands and then only getting paid $6.25 on my 1st BJ. it was my first trip.

    6-5 Blackjack
The high numbers for 6-5 blackjack over 3-2 indicates the level of game sophistication among the masses. The same group of people who when Burger King introduced a one-third pound burger to go up against the Quarter Pounder rejected the new burger because 1/4 is larger than 1/3... In other words, the dimbulbs, the lifeblood of casino management.

    choice
"a lot of players don't have a choice". the unfortunate choice i've made is; i don't play bj anymore in vegas. high table limits doesn't help, either.

    Get off the Strip
There is still plenty of low-limit 3:2 blackjack in Vegas. It just isn't in Strip casinos. Venture to Fremont Street and the locals casinos.

  • VegasVic Mar-19-2022
    Nope
Most people are too lazy/dumb to learn simple basic strategy. They surely aren't smart enough to know 6/5 is worse than 3/2. As Kevin said get off the overpriced, overhyped, overrated strip and there is plenty of 3/2.

    It will go away…
When they replace it with 5/5, or 10/10 blackjack…

    Filling in for Kevin.

    good luck
As long as everybody is stupid enough or should I politely say ignorant to the game it will never happen. The Company Gods and their college educated "know nothing about gaming" number geeks will not let it happen.

    Blame the pro's, advantage players
Thanks to the card counters, advantage players, professional players, etc, for screwing everybody else payoffs in blackjack, video poker and other games . Gambling/casinos were built to be for average peoepl entertainment, fun, and hope you win sometimes. Now the pro advantage players ruined it for the majority of people just looking to have a good time. Pro's think they are smart and beating the casino when all they really are doing is taking money from the average players out for some fun. Casinos are not to blame they have to survive. I understand now the only way to make money on gambling is selling books and videos telling others how to gamble

    6/5 Blackjack
Players still lose with 3:2 BJ or 9/6 JoB video poker. The casinos are basically greedy (resort fees, paid parking, high restaurant prices, etc) and want to skew the odds way against the player. Especially Eldorado with CEO Tom Reeg as CEO.

  • David Mar-19-2022
    I'd like to see ...
... a casino advertise (and offer) 6:4 blackjack and see what happens.

  • David Miller Mar-19-2022
    The Reality
As long as people continue to play 6/5 blackjack, the casinos will offer it. The same goes for those who pay rip-off "resort fees", paid parking, mandated tipping, bottle fees, etc.

    Customer-driven problem
If you owned a casino resort with a huge stream of people willing to overpay for buffets, hotel room resort fees, crazy parking fees and play unfavorable games/machines why would you think about offering 3:2 blackjack? The corporate casino owners will milk this for as long as they can, they'd be silly not to. Advantage players, excess casino greed and other factors might have gotten things to this point, but it will stay like this for as long as flocks of mindless tourists continue to go along with it. It's their participation that keeps things like they are, and fuels new ripoff ideas. A business won't change its profitable operations until less customer action occurs. There's an old saying about making hay while the sun shines, and the casinos are doing exactly that. They are maximizing profits without regard to possible loss of smarter players. I blame the overpaying tourists that go along with this situation, it's their money that tells the casino to continue it.

Bob Nelson took the words right out of my mouth
My first thought was, "6/5 will go away...when it is replaced with even-money." It may not be that far away; I seem to recall at least one "party pit" paying even money. Remember that the Strip is trending away from gamblers and more to the "pool by day, club by night, maybe dinner at some celebrity restaurant and a show, and throw in some gambling while I'm here" crowd.

One reason the casinos love 6-5: it protects them from the people who think they are good card counters.

"...that a lot of players don't have a choice."
There are always choices. You can choose not to pay resort fees and parking fees; and you can choose not to play a substandard game. You can switch to a different game; a different casino; a different gaming destination; or even a different way to occupy your time. Personally, if everything becomes totally unplayable, I plan to go back into politics.
But I agree that 6-5 BJ is probably here to stay. As long as enough people are willing to play it, the casinos have no incentive to offer anything better. That's why I've pretty much given up Blackjack and switched to tournament poker.
My cousin plays 6-5 for the low table limits. I explained it all to him several times, and finally gave up. At least he steps stop-losses, and frequently hits them.
And FWIW, LVA itself recommends the even-money (!) low-stakes game at OYO (formerly Hooters) as one of Las Vegas' "Top-Ten Values." Go figure....

    666/5
    Is what I call it.
Flamingo is first place I saw it. And was the first time I heard a math wiz explain how 6/5 was better than 3/2. I wasn't playing just standing back watching play when Einstein went on his teaching lesson. At first I wasn't sure what he was talking about since I had never heard of 6/5, then I saw it on the table.
Got a good laugh with the dealer after he left but I never sat down to play.
I have played it when the only thing open is a 6-deck but at the bare minimum table while waiting on a double to open up.
