Question of the Day - 15 May 2019

Q:

Is there a movement to ignore 6/5 blackjack? If no one plays it, perhaps it will go away. Playing it is consent to being screwed.

And your link to the new poll on the most influential Las Vegans is at the bottom of the answer.

A:

You know it.

We know it.

Most LVA readers know it. (This is one of our most frequently asked questions, which is why it’s the third time in less than a year we’re running this variation on it.)

But the vast majority of blackjack players either don’t know the difference between 6-5 and 3-2 or have no other choice, since 6-5 is now the rule at most single- and double-deck games with low minimums on the Strip.

Indeed, Bally’s — one of the first casinos to deal 6-5 blackjack, advertised on its marquee that the game was offered “by popular demand.” We’re sure a lot of people believed it.

Obviously, it’s another one of those takebacks that has pretty much become the norm. Plenty of people play 8/5 Jacks or Better (9/6 machines are few and far between) and 7/5 Bonus Poker now. In fact, every time we stop in at the Venetian, we wander over to the roulette pit and more often than not, more players are standing around the triple-zero wheels than the double-zero (itself a takeback from single-zero).

Here at QoD, we’re generally optimistic, with a positive outlook on the future and a deep belief that, thanks to evolution, things are continuously improving. But when it comes to the masses vis-à-vis casino games, it’s clear that ignorance and indifference are the rule and not the exception.

    vp scouting
I’m always amazed to find the highest paying vp games not being played in a casino while people are shoving c-notes in the paper shredding low pay machines. I don’t think you’ll convince vacationers to play smarter. As the slot manager grins.

    Ploppies
You'll always see 6:5 blackjack, as long as there are people out there who think 6:5 is better than 3:2 because 6 is, duh, biglier than 3. One cannot go wrong when relying on the stupidity of the average Joe. As casinos do.

    Gambling
Hoping to win against the odds without a skill set.
Winning is playing games of chance with a skill set.
Poker, either at table or machine requires a skill set to win along with card counting at blackjack.
There is no skill set involved with any other casino game.
Those who came to play without a skill set chose to be a loser who hopes beyond the odds to win and when they win they bet their winnings back into losses.
These are the customers casinos pander to while the rest of us who play with a skill set constantly get the rules changed.
    Such is life.

    Why?
Las Vegas made money during the days of 3:2 single-deck blackjack. I just don't understand the greed of the corporations that have bought all the casinos.

    Old answer....
MGM properties are ALL 6/5 for lower limit - not just single/double deck.
Bonus Poker is 6/5 not 7/5 - and I saw Aria and Luxor bonus poker with the 'bonus' for 2,3,4 4Kind removed.
And yes astonished (MGM) to see no one playing single zero roulette wheel steps away from packed double zero

    "No Other Choice"?
There's always the other choice not to play it; and even the other choice not to go to that casino. Three-to two can still be found if you look for it, mostly off-strip and/or in Laughlin.
I remember that bit with the Bally's marquee. Either they or maybe Paris also advertised it as having "a whopping [sic] 6-5 payout."
But Blackjack is a dying game these days. At least some of us got to enjoy it when it was good.

    "Party Pits"
I noticed many years ago that when most casinos started having the party pits the odds were always at 6:5. People played cause of the "nice" dealers. So that slowly expanded to the rest of the tables. I still play 3:2 at the D when I go. I believe there are a couple other downtown properties that do as well. Of course those aren't all double or single deck games.

    What do you expect?
"Is there a movement to ignore 6/5 blackjack?" Yeah, but not an organized one. Just a lot of players, both in our group & elsewhere, commiserating with each other to confirm how bad 6/5 is & affirm that we won't play it. But we aren't the majority. Vegas makes way more money in the 2.5 weekend days Fri-Sat-Sun than it does in the 4.5 days of mid-week; note how weekend lodging rates are much higher than mid-week ones. The weekend crowd does not consist of studious gamblers; it's composed of workers who hate their jobs (including quartets of military guys from the San Diego area) & come to Vegas to let loose. They couldn't care less about the things that are important to us. They just want to check in to their hotel as fast as they can & get down to the tables (around midnight), get an alcoholic drink, maybe light up a cigarette (if they smoke), & let out a big whoop. They always go to Strip hotels, so they don't know that any places pay more than 6/5. They think 6/5 is all there is.

    Stupidity is no surprise
We shake our heads in disbelief when we see a triple-0 roulette table packed with players while the double-0 table has none; but really, should we? There are a lot of people who are way below 100 on the IQ scale; there have to be to balance out all the sharp & bright minds in our group (& elsewhere). I once heard a lady playing video poker tell me, "I'm glad this machine knows what it's doing, because I sure don't." I once saw a guy next to me at a blackjack table double down on a 14 against the dealer's Ace. And leaving gambling for a moment, one of Jay Leno's Headlines was an ad in a newspaper in which a woman named Tammy wanted to swap her 9"x13" baking pan for someone else's 13"x9" baking pan so that she could make a certain recipe. The stupid people are out there, they like to come to Vegas, & they're probably even stupider while they're in Vegas (especially after a few drinks). The casinos love it when they come; why not invent things that are more & more adverse to the player?

    No real shock
The fact people flock to 6:5 tables is no shock at all. As we saw on Nov 8, 2016 one can never UNDERestimate the (Lack of) Intelligence of the American People. Even the ones that understand the difference say it is "Only 30-cents" so no biggie. YES - IT IS A "BIGGIE!"

A few times I have stopped at a table and could not tell if it was 3:2 or 6:5. The table was packed except for one open seat. I asked and was told 6:5 and then asked if I wanted a seat. I said in a voice loud enough for all at the table to hear that I was not that stupid to play 6:5 BJ and how it was one of the biggest ripoffs the casinos had. The dealer said nothing because he knew I was right. A few brainless dinosaur blue haired grandmothers at the table looked at me like I was crazy and then went back to their hands. Nothing I could do to help them since they were too hopeless for help.

Knowing how much the "suits" screw people over with Parking and Resort Fees this is nothing new. Sad but nothing new.

That's when I stopped playing BJ.
