Does the affordable steak dinner still exist in Las Vegas? A friend of mine asked me what are my picks for steakhouses in Las Vegas. I answered it depends on how much you want to spend. If you don’t mind spending $200 per person, there are a dozen great steakhouses on the Strip. Just like most other places, food and restaurant prices in Las Vegas have gone insane. For example, paying $80 for a New York Strip, plus $15 to add a baked potato. Of course there is always the steak special at Ellis Island, but what if you want something more upscale? Say you're looking for a white tablecloth, special night out, but at an affordable price. Where do you go? Does the affordable steak dinner still exist or is that now a thing of the past?
Well, we're afraid that your criteria are incongruous or even mutually exclusive.
Any number of good-value steak dinners are available in Las Vegas, starting of course with the one at Ellis Island, with which we're all familiar (these days, it's $9.99 and still number one in our Top Ten). In addition, if you pay attention to our Dining Notes column in the Advisor, there we cover bargain steaks, though they're almost always at the local bars around the city. One recent example is the 16-ounce ribeye that comes with salad, loaded baked potato, vegetable, and garlic toast for $19.99 (on Tuesday nights) at Scoundrels Tavern & Eatery out by the Las Vegas Speedway. Another 16-ounce ribeye is available at Jackson's bars for $13.99 (and we have a coupon in the MRB that actually comps this dinner after earning 200 points on a machine). Others include Jake's, Mr. D's, and the reliable Longhorn Casino out on Boulder Highway, all with good steak dinners for under $20.
You won't, to be sure, find white tablecloths at these places. But if it's an affordable steak you're looking for, they're the ones.
As for fancy steakhouses, it all depends on your definition of affordable and the cut of steak you're looking for. Flat irons and skirts are always less expensive than the strips, ribeyes, and filets on the menus, but proper steaks nonetheless. Examples of those we can recommend are Herbs and Rye (8-ounce flat iron $36, 14-ounce New York strip $44), Cleaver (flat iron $36, New York $42), and Echo & Rig (skirt steak $37, ribeye $43). And recently, we had a fantastic 12-ounce filet at Main Street Provisions in the Arts District for $42.
Then there's always Top of Binion's, where you can use our 25% off coupon for up to $75. That cuts the cost of a steak to around $55.
Those are just the ones that come quickly to mind. We're sure that a number of youse out in QoDville can recommend others and please do so in the comment boxes for the benefit of all.
