Question of the Day - 28 May 2020

Q:

When this lockdown is all over, we'll be coming to Las Vegas to take advantage of all the deals we expect will be offered by the casinos to drum up business. Can you tell us where we need to go at the airport to get picked up by Uber/Lyft for the ride to the Strip?

A:

At McCarran International, pickup locations are in the parking garages.

At Terminal 1, it’s Level 2M; at Terminal 3, it’s at Level V (for valet). Look for and follow the signs for Ride Sharing.

Uber and Lyft drivers can drop you off right at the departing-flights curb, so you have to haul your bags only to the parking garage on arrival, not departure.

During non-surge periods, expect to pay $10-$13 from the airport to center Strip. That's compared to closer to $16-$18 for a cab ride.

Most Strip hotels have dedicated areas for Uber and Lyft, just like for taxis. Look for the signs. At some properties, such as MGM Grand, it can be a bit of a walk, but these parking areas are generally convenient, and drivers can usually drop you off at a place of your choosing.

    Rates?
Are surge periods for Uber and Lyft predictable from the airport, and during those times do rates get over the price of a cab?

    Taxi fares
There are several websites that give typical taxi fares from the airport to various Strip hotels. So you can find out fairly easily what a cab ride will probably cost, then knowing that you can compare it to what Uber says the charge will be. Of course, traffic conditions will influence the cab ride cost since the meter is clicking even when the cab is stopped, so keep that difference in mind. Cab drivers drive the popular routes all the time, so I've had good luck just asking the driver for an estimate on what the charge will be.
