Question of the Day - 24 May 2022

Q:

I don't know how long you have been publishing a monthly top ten values list, but is there a Top Ten ALL TIME values list of the Top Ten Values? I presume that the Ellis Island steak dinner would be the all-time leader, maybe followed by the Golden Gate $0.99 shrimp cocktail.

A:

There isn't, but we took an informal survey of long-time Top Ten aficionados of our acquaintance and came up with one. (Don't tell them, but we gave a little extra weight to the memories of Anthony and Deke.)

Note that these deals are limited to their duration in the Top Ten; most either went up in price or down in quality/value since then. Only two -- Ellis Island and Arizona Charlie's -- remain on the current list.

Here it is, in reverse.

10. Binion's free photo in front of the $1 million in $10,000 bills

9. Mac King

8. One-pound king-crab dinner at Palace Station for $9.99

7. Various hot dog deals -- South Point, Barbary Coast, Westward Ho

6. Binion's late-night $2 steak dinner

5. Rio Carnival World Buffet

4. Various $1 beer deals -- Stage Door, Casino Royale

3. Arizona Charlie's breakfast

2. 50/99-cent shrimp cocktail at Golden Gate

1. Ellis Island complete steak dinner

For whatever reasons, the cheap buffets at Stations never made it into the top 10, but I always thought they belonged there. $5-10 for breakfast/lunch/dinner. Sigh.

    Ho dog
I remember that Westward Ho dog. It was like 99c for a 16oz hot dog, but once you had a taste you'd readily pony up the $3.99 for mustard.

    Been there, done that
    I have had #3, #4, #5, #7, #9 and #10. Don't care for seafood, but strange I didn't do the steak dinners.

    Ribs at Ellis Island
A few years ago we had the ribs dinner at Ellis Island, using a coupon after playing a bit. OMG SO MUCH FOOD (sorry, I got carried away :). It was really good, lots of food, I was so grateful I had a frig in my room. I don't know why that doesn't make the list with the steak dinner, which I've also had in the past, when you also got a beer with it.

beer and a dog for $1
Imperial Palace (sans Linq) used to have a guy standing out front handing out coupons for a hotdog and a beer for $1 - you had to cross the casino floor to the back to get the dog then cross the floor to the other side to collect the beer.

The Fun book at the Casino Royale with a blackjack match up to $25 and a ton of slot free play, along with 0.25 well drinks. Their standard bar offering was $1 Margaritas or Coronas. Margaritaville two doors down must have hated them.

I remember the 1.99 and 1.88 steak and eggs that used to be offered at The dunes and the Sands.

    Binions
we would eat that $2 late night steak nearly every night back in the 90s.

    Rick Sanchez list
is unfortunately the "new Vegas" and it's why I won't be going back any time soon. However, I insist on at least 75% off that kick in the nuts. Because I deserve it, dammit.

    The good old days
Oh yes, the cheap buffets not mentioned. Why?

Vegas is ridiculously expensive now (even before the pandemic). I was annoyed at seeing a YouTube creator (influencer) rationalizing resort fees and gaslighting people who complain about them. We are living in a different era now. And casino owners plus greedy corporations are all part of social media engineering.

    The Dunes
I remember my first trip in 1984. The Dunes had 25 cent 16 oz Miller drafts and 99 cent roast beef sandwiches. Four beers and a roast beef sandwich for 2 bucks, you couldn't beat it.

Two bucks in 1984 dollars with inflation calculator is $5.57 in today dollars. That was a great deal for 4 beers and roast beef sandwich.

    Steak?
I tried the Ellis Island Steak offer a few years ago. Just like Mom's cooking---Tough and dry. Very watery instant potatos. Not worth the money and not worth the hassle of activating the offer.

    Ellis ?? Really ?
I agree with Doozey, I don’t get the Ellis Island steak being on the list, 4 of us tried to eat it last summer…tried is the key word , not a value at any price now, maybe at one time it was
