Question of the Day - 04 November 2023

Q:

I was shopping for taxes on gambling books on LVA and selected Tax Help for Gamblers Fourth Edition. When I decided to purchase it, I had the option to add it to the cart or buy it on Amazon. Which purchase method provides the most benefit to LVA/Huntington Press?

A:

Well, thank you for asking! It's a good question and we're more than happy to explain the difference.

Buying direct from us is always much better for us.

Amazon takes 55% off the top of the sale and if anything goes wrong, we have to make good on it. That means we resend a book and pay for shipping and they don't credit us a thing. Essentially, they wash their hands of any book that doesn't get delivered for any reason.

Also, though they do pay like clockwork and we mean almost down to the minute, we don't receive our share for 90 days after the end of the month in which the sale is made. That's a long time for the cash flow, compared to the money from a direct sale, which essentially goes straight into our bank account the next day.

Also, it's usually better for you when you buy from us. Although Amazon has free shipping for Prime members, the selling price of our books is almost always retail. When you shop with us, we discount the books by 15% or more off the retail price. We do have the flat rate of $7 shipping, but when you buy more than one book, it's worth it. Also, we ship just as fast as Amazon.

    Ouch!
55% Rake and 90 day Receivables... Damn! I can see where Amazon opens your Market to the whole world, but why on earth if someone is on your site and checking out, would you give them that option?

    Good to know!
That's great info about how Amazon works. I think I've always orders books through you if for any reason, I like supporting small businesses. You forgot to mention that you have some good sales every now and then that I've taken advantage of. Something to keep in mind as the holiday season approaches.

    Right Decision
I bought some books (last month?) and I'm glad I ordered through you. Excellent customer service!

    What a nice racket.
When you consider that Amazon takes their slice for being nothing but an intermediary for the stuff they sell...their costs are minimal compared to the revenue generated. They have NO production costs and minimal inventory maintenance costs (since they only actually handle a fraction of the stuff they sell).
No surprise that they're making money hand over fist. And now's that time of year when people show up in their RVs at their "fulfillment centers" and get worked half to death in conditions resembling a 19th century steel mill. But the survivors are well paid :)
