Question of the Day - 13 April 2021

Q:

What amusement park rides and attractions are running during COVID? Any of the roller coasters or Ferris wheels running? Ziplines downtown?

A:

Downtown zipline Slotzilla shut down along with everything else a year ago. It reopened on June 3 and is going strong.

The ziplines at The Linq, called Fly Linq, were grounded in mid-March. They became airborne again on July 2 with “enhanced public health protocols,” operating on a Thursday-Sunday schedule.

The zipline at the Rio is not operating at this time. We're told by the box office, "They have plans to reopen it sometime soon, but we haven't been notified when that might be."

The Las Vegas High Roller observation wheel shut down on March 17. It returned to circulation on June 4, with limited hours (noon to midnight) and ridership.

As for rollercoasters, New York-New York’s Big Apple roller coaster reopened in February after repairs to the track due to a train-car derailment just before Christmas. Everything seems to be back to normal, except for the COVID precautions. These include hand-sanitizing stations and social distancing in the waiting line, at least one empty row of cars between each filled row, and allowing only groups to sit together. All cars, whether occupied or not, are wiped down between rides.

The big Desperado coaster in Primm seems to be defunct. In several phone calls, we were told that it hasn't opened since the shutdown.

All the rides at the top of the Stratosphere -- Big Shot, XScream, Insanity, and Sky Jump -- are in operation and available in bundles of one, two, or three rides (SkyJump is purchased separately).

    Amusement...
The casino rides are pretty pathetic compared to those you find at a normal amusement park. Pretty much every other city the size of Vegas has at least one major amusement park. I'm sure that the casinos have prevented that from happening, though--competition for local and tourist dollars. You want your goddamn amusement, get your ass in here and sit down at a slot machine.

Wet and Wild used to be a lot of fun. Then it was strangled so a casino could be built there. Because, at the time, Vegas had about forty casinos on the Strip and one water park. That was obviously too many water parks and not enough casinos.

There's now a water park wayyyy out in Henderson, away from almost everything else, but Vegas still doesn't and probably never will have something like Six Flags. Unless they figure out a way to put slot machines inside roller coaster cars, of course. Or maybe they could loosen bolts on the coasters and take bets on when one will fail...?
