I love Pai Gow Poker. The Downstream Casino, outside of Joplin, Missouri, has just changed from 6-card to 7-card. No commission on either game. The new 7-card is licensed by Galaxy. The wheel is the 2nd best straight. If you have to use the joker in the high hand, without having an ace or better in the low hand, the best you can do is push; you can’t win. That makes up for commission-free.

Tonight, on videopoker.com, I was playing 10-Play Triple Double Bonus Poker. I was dealt the ace, 2, 3, and 5 of diamonds, and the ace of spades. Given the chances of an inside straight flush against what four aces (particularly with the kicker) pays on Triple Double, I held the two aces, which I believe was the right hold. After the draw, the first card in three out of the 10 hands had, in fact, the 4 of diamonds. So I would have connected on three straight flushes had I kept the four- card straight flush. I’m trying to calculate the odds of this result and the nearest I can compute is 1/47 times 1/47 times 1/47 (since the three hands were independent events) or approximately 1 in 103,000.

Related to QOD 4/25/17, if a group of 4 people each play $21 in Megabucks and agree to split the big jackpot if anyone hits, what would be the best way for them to handle the annual payouts and taxes?

Concerning the answer to the straight being the second highest in Pai Gow Poker, all house rules have two aces and any other pair being split. If one of the aces is the joker, only two straights can be made (Broadway and the A to 5). Since the house always wants the edge, the A to 5 is then the second highest and that is the reason, not because they just wanted the game to be different.

Recently I was visiting downtown and was walking by the offices of the Granite Gaming Group, the former owners of Glitter Gulch, Mermaids and Le Bayou. The offices appeared to be vacant and I was wondering, did Derek Stevens buy the whole company or just the businesses they ran downtown? Do they own any other business or gambling interests in Nevada?

Skill-Based Slots Part 2: How are these machines doing so far?

A recent news story reported that slot machines aren't very popular with younger gamblers and you've previously mentioned the introduction of machines more like video games to attract the millennial crowd. How are these machines working out? What is the outlook for casinos if slot machines, the bedrock of gambling income, sit idle in future years?
