I know this isn't so much about Vegas, but it’s about a city that probably doesn't exist without Las Vegas. I have driven to Las Vegas 100+ times in my life from the greater L.A. area. I pass through Barstow, which is a big enough city/area to support the people there as far as homes, grocery stores, hospital, and even a Community College. Once I pass Barstow, nothing really exists for 60 miles until I get to Baker, a "city" that is but a few miles long and not very wide. I have never seen anything but restaurants and gas stations there and anything to suggest people can live there full-time. So where do the people who work in Baker actually live? Barstow is 60-ish miles away as is Primm so where do those who work in Baker actually live?

Re: your recent news item, I didn't even know there was an Elvis exhibit downtown (never saw an ad.) Now it's leaving... Besides Trent Carlini and "Fat Elvis" (he's great), plus a guest spot in Legends at Flamingo, where's Elvis? When we started coming to Vegas in 2000 or so, he was everywhere. As the casino lounges disappeared in favor of trendy "clubs," so did he!

I recently visited Las Vegas with a friend from Massachusetts. He doesn't drive but he has a "Liquor ID," issued by the state of MA, which proves (in MA, at least!) that he's over 21. However, this was not accepted by Vegas casinos as proof of age, the stated reason being that this particular form of state-issued ID wasn't in "The Book". So, what is this "Book"? Is there a public listing of which IDs do qualify as proof-of-age in Nevada?

The Feb 20 QoD concerned the Meridian and referenced the murder that occurred in their parking area. In your answer you stated, 'self-styled pimp, Ammar Harris, is accused of first degree murder, which included the deaths of a cab driver and his fare.' I don't know if anyone else noticed, but in the last sentence of that paragraph you go on to say that Harris was convicted of rape and robbery last September. My Question? Why the hell wasn't this guy in jail? Doesn't Las Vegas put CONVICTED rapists and robbers in jail anymore?

Driving in from Bakersfield, close to the Cali-Nevada line, there’s what I’m sure is a huge solar-power installation. I’ve seen other such projects in the Southwest, but this one seems to use mirrors instead of collectors, and tall towers stand in the center of the fields. I suppose I could Google it, but I’m sure lots of other people have the same question: What kind of plant is it?
