I saw in today's news that Clark County's population surpassed 2 million. But what about the the city? How many people live in the entire metropolitan area including North Las Vegas, Summerlin and Henderson?

You ceaselessly – and incorrectly – refer to the "Las Vegas Valley." Here’s a geology/geography lesson: A valley is an elongated depression in the earth’s surface carved out over a protracted period of time by the moving water of a river. No, the Colorado River doesn’t qualify because it’s too distant. The Las Vegas metropolitan area is situated not in a valley but in a "bowl" or "basin," surrounded by mountains on all sides. Look up at the horizon and check it out.

Your question of the day from April 5, 2014 led me to ask this question on pool access for non-hotel guests or specifically for locals. Which hotel pools are open to the public, or locals, at no charge and which ones have just a modest charge similar to the $10 mentioned at Bally's?

With pool season starting, are there any hotels that have a pool that is more fitting for the middle-aged crowd? Less party atmosphere, more relaxing, but not to the point of a senior center?

I'll be coming to Vegas in May and I like to perform stand-up at open mic nights. Are you aware of any bars/clubs/etc. that hold open mic nights, specifically for comedy and not music or poetry?

I know this isn't so much about Vegas, but it’s about a city that probably doesn't exist without Las Vegas. I have driven to Las Vegas 100+ times in my life from the greater L.A. area. I pass through Barstow, which is a big enough city/area to support the people there as far as homes, grocery stores, hospital, and even a Community College. Once I pass Barstow, nothing really exists for 60 miles until I get to Baker, a "city" that is but a few miles long and not very wide. I have never seen anything but restaurants and gas stations there and anything to suggest people can live there full-time. So where do the people who work in Baker actually live? Barstow is 60-ish miles away as is Primm so where do those who work in Baker actually live?

I have stayed at many hotels in Vegas over the past 30 years and recall that only one swimming pool, at Bally's, is deeper than 4 feet. Are there any other pools at hotels that are similar to Bally's, which was over 6 feet deep in some places?

I heard somewhere that there is a fault in the western part of Las Vegas valley. Has there ever been a quake of any significance? What are the chances of one?

Just heard Caesar's is selling Bally's and the new Cromwell. I cannot believe they are giving up that corner! Do you think this may bring in some competition for better VP schedules? At least for a few months.

Re: your recent news item, I didn't even know there was an Elvis exhibit downtown (never saw an ad.) Now it's leaving... Besides Trent Carlini and "Fat Elvis" (he's great), plus a guest spot in Legends at Flamingo, where's Elvis? When we started coming to Vegas in 2000 or so, he was everywhere. As the casino lounges disappeared in favor of trendy "clubs," so did he!
