Question of the Day - 05 March 2021

Q:

Undoubtedly, you’ve been tempted to write a question to answer, either when submissions were low or when you had info you thought was important to share. Have you done this? Can you give an example or two and your rationale?

A:

In the early period of Question of the Day, before Jessica Roe took over managing it, Anthony and Deke shared the responsibility for posting the daily dose of QoD. Admittedly, before the questions started arriving with regularity, on occasion they found themselves without a decent question to answer, so they had to make them up. Even then, though they weren't exactly recieved through QoD's Submit a Question function, the boys heard them frequently from subscribers who showed up at the office or wrote in via snail or email, or overheard them in snippets of conversation in casinos, or someone on staff wanted to know the answers to them.

Examples of those included, "What the heck is 9/6 JoB, FPDW, NSUD, and TITO?" And "What's going on in Las Vegas for Halloween?" And one of our top FAQs, "How do video poker machines deal the cards?" And "Where's the closest place to camp -- in a small tent -- to the Las Vegas Strip?" (The latter after Deke spent a weekend at the Red Rock Canyon Campground.)

That went on until enough questions started piling up that Anthony and Deke no longer had to create them. However, they were already in the habit, so to speak, so they still did from time to time.

When Jessica took over, she was committed to answering as many submitted questions as possible to enhance the interactivity of the website, so when the boys tried to continue their practice, she ... demurred. (In other words, she flatly refused and held her ground so firmly that they promptly gave up. Jessica was -- and is -- nothing if not formidable.)

Fast forward. Post-Jessica, yes, it happens again every now and then.

Right after Jessica left, Anthony and Deke had some questions of their own saved up and were now finally able to run them. Beyond those, as many of you have noticed, we sometimes plant the seed for questions in our answers and one of you almost always takes the hint and complies by submitting the question we're looking for, bless your cooperative hearts. Other times, yes, we do make 'em up, generally when we've run across a good answer -- information, background, anecdote, correlation, follow-up, etc. -- that begs the question.

As for more recent examples, we'll pass on the opportunity to provide any. Hey, we can't give up all of our secrets. But we will say this. They tend to adhere to a certain stylistic consistency, which sharp-eyed readers might be able to pick up on.

Good hunting!

    Quis custodiet ipsos custodes?
Was this question actually submitted or did you compile it yourselves? 🤣

    A veritable Klein bottle
A Question of the Day about the Question of the Day! How, like, meta, or something. (The somewhat obscure reference in the title of this post relates to topology.)

    doesn't matter!
I don't care if you answer your questions or someone else's questions! I find about 95% of the questions you answer absolutely fascinating. The remaining 5% are not bad, but just not my interest. I am sure, however, that ALL questions are interesting to someone. Keep up the great work, no matter whose questions you answer!!!

"... though they weren't exactly recieved ...." Fewer and fewer of us care about spelling rules these days.

    I DID wonder
Sometimes the Q (and answer) looks like a commercial or promo and I wonder, did someone ask that or did they want to promote something? Either way, the answer is usually interesting and informative. But I also remember the comments you make about how far backed up you are with questions, so I assumed it was just my imagination that you'd make some up yourselves. But come to think of it, if you guys are puzzled by something that needs to be checked out, I'm sure it would be of interest to the rest of us.
