Question of the Day - 29 November 2021

Q:

What’s the story with Bally’s closing all their restaurants? Will the burger restaurant stay there once Bobby Flay opens his at Paris?

A:

As for Burger Brasserie at Bally's, our prediction is it's probably on the chopping block. Management is likely to want to drive traffic to the Flay restaurant and not have competition so close at hand.

In terms of the wave of restaurant closures, which began with the elimination of the venerable Sterling Brunch, it was taken by some to mean that Caesars Entertainment was positioning Bally’s for a sale. Hard Rock International, the thinking ran, was going to buy Bally’s and implode it, ultimately replacing it with a custom-built Hard Rock resort.

However, Hard Rock seems to have been more interested in the Planet Hollywood resort, although negotiations reportedly fell apart over the fate of the Aladdin Theater for the Performing Arts. (Caesars wanted to keep it, the narrative ran, even though it is physically part of Planet Hollywood.) Now Vital Vegas author Scott Roeben informs us that the Seminole Tribe, owners of Hard Rock, is kicking the tires on The Mirage (newly for sale), so any purchase of a Caesars asset appears to be off their radar.

Furthermore, Caesars recently put a $2 billion price target on the long-hyped sale of one of its Strip assets. Bally’s wouldn’t merit that on its best day. The underlying real estate is undoubtedly worth more than the old (built in 1973) Bally’s that sits atop it. The denuding Bally’s of amenities is a bit of a puzzler, unless …

... It presages the other narrative swirling around Bally’s at the moment -- namely, that it will be rebranded as a Horseshoe, bringing one of Caesars’ most-loved imprimaturs to the Strip and clearing the way for the Tropicana to be renamed Bally’s … as it will soon be owned by Bally’s Corp., formerly Twin River Holdings.

More on this tomorrow, when we consider the fate of the retail/restaurant promenade connecting Bally’s with Paris-Las Vegas.

    Corporate Monopoly game
No matter who owns what, the Strip will always be an egregious ripoff. Which particular megacorporation owns what will matter as much to the average visitor as who made the rope matters to a person being hanged.

    Tom Reeg CEO
Mr. Reeg CEO of ElDiablo has made it clear about eating options in LV…
A). The “Overpriced Celebrity Restaurant Experience”
B). It’s not our responsibility to feed you if you don’t like option A, go find a McDonald’s on the way home even if you are staying at our properties.
Real class act, but what do you expect from the Carano Family Circus.

    More bean counting
Just another reason NOT to visit the strip - which I have not done for years. These corporations have and continue to give visitors less reasons to visit the strip - with their constant war on everything that used to make Vegas the place to visit. To name a few of their past and current "decisions"- (1) decimation of all slots and video poker games, (2) - rip off "resort fees", (3) paid parking, (4) 6/5 Blackjack, (5) the ever increasing table game limits. I can envision the day when the strip becomes barren as people refuse to fund these corporations any longer. Their demise is on the horizon as they kill off any reason for anyone wishing to Visit Vegas.

    Safe bet...
If this becomes Horseshoe, it will probably end up with Jack Binion's Steakhouse, a J.B. Cafe, a "Burger Bar" (Ceasars branded) and some kind of noodle/asian themed place. At least that seems to be the common theme among most of the existing Horseshoe's across the country.

    Burger places
Burger Brasserie is in Paris (the entire walkway that "connects" the two is considered part of Paris). My understanding is Bobby's is going to replace it in that same space.

    Gaming License
Didn’t LVA tell us in another QOD that Bally’s and Paris share a gaming license? How does that effect the sale of Bally’s by itself?

    The Shadow Knows...
Sounds like we need Orson Welles to ask, "Who knows what evil lurks in the hearts of men?" And we're fairly certain when it comes to Caesar's, it involves something evil.

    Chip Collectors
A new name on the strip is a boon to Chip Collectors.... otherwise what is the place offering that no one else is. Its a very tired property, a rebrand without a major upgrade is just P**sing in the wind.

For me, that day came long ago. I watched them build Bally's (then the first MGM Grand) and went there once to see the Hollywood show--but that was it. Also went to Paris to check it out, shortly after it opened; but didn't put a chip on a table or even get a croissant. And that was before six-to-five Blackjack and paid parking.

As for Bally's and Paris, the corporate moguls can merge, spin off, and rename them, de-theme and re-theme them, sell them--and the land under them--to each other and then lease them back, all as they see fit. And the same for the rest of the strip.

May the Devil go with them and sixpence, so they'll want neither money nor company.
