Question of the Day - 14 September 2022

Q:

Bally’s used to have a beautiful showroom, but I cannot remember the name of it. Whatever became of it? I saw many outstanding headliners there, such as Barbara Mandrel, the Four Tops, and Paul Anka.

A:

The Celebrity Room was the name of the 1,200-seat headliner venue, which was where you saw your concerts. It bit the dust in the late 1990s when it was removed to make way for the interior walkway between Bally's and Paris.

Bally's still has the beautiful 1,000-seat Jubilee Theater. These days, the Vegas-style extravaganza, aptly named Extravaganza, plays there. When Bally's opened in 1973, it was called the Ziegfeld Room, but was changed in 1981 when Donn Arden's show Jubilee! started its long run in the room. Jubilee! graced that stage for 35 years, finally shutting down on February 11, 2016.

Bally's, soon to be renamed the Horseshoe, also has the intimate 200-seat Magic Attic up on the mezzanine level, where Farrell Dillon, LIOZ, Potted Potter, and Paranormal are currently appearing. The Magic Attic replaced Windows Showroom a few years ago.

    Rocky IV
I believe one of these rooms may also have been used to film the Apollo Creed death fight scene in Rocky IV. I think I remember a clip from the movie showing the Zeigfeld room, although this movie was filmed in 1985, and the QOD mentions it changing names in 1981, so maybe not?

    Jubilee Theater
As a theater person, one of the great experiences I've had in LV was just before "Jubilee" closed. They offered backstage guided tours of the theater, so people could see the technical end of what went on. The mechanicals were fascinating, state-of-the-art from the early 80's, and the costume areas were interesting in a "you never knew how much work went into this show" way.

As much as I liked "Jubilee", I liked the tour even more.

Totally agree with Raymond. That tour was fascinating.
