Question of the Day - 22 January 2021

Q:

I really have enjoyed many of Barney Vinson’s books over the years. He certainly has a wealth of Las Vegas experiences. Can you update us on how he is doing these days?

A:

Barney Vinson is a retired dealer and casino executive whose two-book humor series, Las Vegas Behind the Tables, was groundbreaking in its time (late 1980s). Later, we published two other books by Barney, Casino Secrets and his novel The Vegas Kid.

We caught up with Barney at a horseshoe-tossing contest in a vacant lot in Georgetown, Texas. We read him your question and the following is the transcription of his response, verbatim.

"Well, sir, ain't much to say. 'Bout four years ago, I come home from my job at the car wash and found all the locks changed and not a light on anywheres. I figgered my wife at the time was trying to tell me something, so I lit out for Texas where I finished three years of high school way back when.

"As far as Vegas goes, the town has lost a lot of what made it famous -- cheap meals, lounge shows, free drinks, stuff like 'at. The bidniz has changed so much. Why, I by God remember when people gambled at some'n besides slot machines and actual celebrities played in the showrooms. But that was a long time ago. Wadn't much left to write about, far as I'uz concerned.

"But I'm thinking about writin' agin. This one will be about Texas and what really went down at the Alamo. I'll keep you posted."

    Great sense of humor
    What a hoot!!!

Right on target about how far most (but not all) of Las Vegas casinos have gone downhill since the corporate accountants took over.

    Gotta love Barney!
Couldn't help chuckle at Barney's appraisal of the decline of the Vegas we all loved. Humorous but sadly accurate! Thanks for including it in today's QOTD. :)
