Vegas is certainly turning into a legit sports town — including, apparently, BattleBots, the international robot-fighting tournaments. Has BattleBots settled into Caesars for good now?
For the uninitiated, "BattleBots" is an American TV series based on the British program "Robot Wars." The basic premise is that custom home-crafted remote-controlled robots of all shapes, sizes, and weaponry try to tear each other to pieces in a sort of boxing-match elimination-tournament format (complete with opposing corners); factor a fair amount of Demolition Derby in the mix with a lot of flying debris. The robots fight until one or both are immobilized.
Prizes start at $5,000 to winning bots of round 3, $10,000 to round 4, and $25,000 to the tournament champion.
The show originally aired on Comedy Central, then moved to ABC, and is now broadcast on the Discovery Channel.
The "BattleBots" concept is not without a sense of humor. In the past, it has employed onetime Vegas headliner Carmen Electra as a ringside reporter and “technical expert” Bill Nye, “The Science Guy.” There’s even been a “bot whisperer” on the payroll. By the way, Silverton Casino owner Ed Roski Jr. is the father of BattleBots co-founder Trey Roski. So there’s another Las Vegas connection.
"BattleBots" is taped at Caesars Entertainment's TV production studios at 4165 Koval Lane. It's a spectator sport and you can buy tickets to the tournaments, which start at $40 and peak out at $120.
So the answer to the question is: perhaps. A 2022 season of "Battlebots" has been announced, though beyond that, it's anyone's guess.
