Question of the Day - 15 November 2020

Q:

The Golden Gate Hotel used to have a restaurant called the Bay City Diner. What became of it? Has it relocated to another hotel?

A:

The Bay City Diner was a popular downtown restaurant located along the west side of the Golden Gate on Main Street, whose outside entrance was right at the corner of Main and Fremont. It was a classic diner-type eatery, a long and narrow room with eight or so booths along a wall of windows, a dozen or so seats at the counter, and a signature etched-glass pane in the front corner where, if we recall correctly, Kevin Spacey and Helen Hunt sat in the movie Pay It Forward

We couldn't come up with a date that it opened, but we know when it closed: in 2010. That was when it was replaced by the iconic southern California diner Du-par's. Du-par's itself closed on February 7, 2017, abruptly and unexpectedly. No restaurant ever reopened in the space and to our knowledge, the Bay City Diner hasn't resurfaced anywhere in Las Vegas. If if ever had a chance of doing so, it probably would have at Circa. But it didn't.

    RIP Bay City
Back in the day this place had the best downtown breakfast at a great price. Big portions of food, bottomless cup of coffee, “seasoned” but sweet servers. DuPars was ok, but never made it to the level of Bay City Diner...
