Question of the Day - 24 September 2020

Q:

Poll Preview: Las Vegas' best dining experiences

A:

The following was submitted as a Question of the Day, in response to a QoD in which we reiterated that we're eternal optimists.

"I share your optimism, so let’s have a positive topic. Some of the things I enjoy most on my visits to Las Vegas are dining experiences. I know you publish books about the best food, but I’m talking about the best experiences. One of my favorite is the patio at Mon Ami Gabi. The food is excellent but I also love the people, the Strip, fountains, and buildings. Nowhere else on Earth is the same. Can you give me a list of recommendations of dining experiences that a visitor should not miss?"

Great question, but rather than just running through our preferred dining experiences, we figured, why not collect everyone's, then vote on the best? Also, we haven't run a dining question since the shutdown six long months ago, so it's time for one. Of course, these experiences aren't necessarily all available now, but that's okay. Since this is a positive topic based on looking on the bright side, we're including them whether they're open or not in the hope that they'll not only all return, but they'll come back better than ever.

These are just a few examples to get your creative (and digestive) juices flowing. Please add your own great Las Vegas dining experiences in the comment boxes. We'll include them all in the poll that will launch next week.

    Sort it!
    That is all.
    Just list them alphabetically.

    More Tiki Please
The Golden Tiki on Spring Mt. Rd. just west of the strip is a good candidate for this poll. It's close enough to the strip. Of course, I personally wish Tiki Rooms would make a big comeback.

    Best dining
Got to Hugo’s Cellar to the list. After 50 years of coming to Vegas Hugo’s still tops the list for me!

    Rose. Rabbit. Lie
I know most people always look at online reviews with a little suspicion - a restaurant can't be *that* good, can it? But Rose. Rabbit. Lie. has earned every single one of those reviews. What a great place, I had a fantastic time there. Now, to be sure, it's important to get the right table, not every table is desirable. But for a great night out, it's hard to beat this place.

    Hugo's Cellar
Got to disagree about Hugo's Cellar - perhaps we got the Maitre d' on an off night - we thought he was rude - never been back again.

  • Mike Binney Sep-24-2020
    Casa Di Amore
THE best Vegas Dining Experience is not even listed. CASA DI AMORE. Excellent food, service, ambiance and entertainment - every time! And fair prices to boot.

    Michael's
Michael's at Barbary Coast was an amazing experience from the food to the service. Not sure if it's the same since moving to South Point.

    The word "experiences" is key
For good, upper end food and Vegs 'experience' I always recommend Binion's Steak House for location, views and value.

That said, one of the greatest dining 'experiences' that I have is at Chicago Brewing across the street from Binion's in the Four Queens.

There is something about sitting back in a VERY comfortable chair, having a flight (or three) of excellent house-made craft brews, eating great pizza, while watching a football game, that just seems to "work" for me after a day of gambling and sightseeing. I've recommended this to friends and have been doing this myself for the last 3-4 years. It is always a great experience.

    No chains
I would remove Sr. Frogs and any other chain/formula restaurant.
How could you have forgotten Battista's ... its an experience.
    There is also Lindo Michoacan

    dining
fine dining is not my thing since the only one I've been to is Dick's at Excalibur several years ago. But looking forward to poll results, people ask me all the time about Vegas dining options and I never have an answer

    Golden Steer
You must add the Golden Steer. Also, how about Caoos Restaurant and Speakeasy on Sahara

  • Bruce Debele Sep-24-2020
    Best Dining
The Steak House at Circus Circus

  • Roger Gallizzi Sep-24-2020
    More
Michael's at South Point, Golden Steer, The Steak House at Circus Circus, The Italian American Club, Herbs and Rye, Bob Taylor's Ranch House

    Mesa Grill
We love Bobby Flay's Mesa Grill at Caesars and Lago at Bellagio

  • Debra Grimes Sep-24-2020
    Fave Dining Experiences
We also love the Mesa Grill. From the creative preparation and presentation of the food to the decor, we enjoy it every time. Another favorite is the downtown restaurant 'eat' where we go every visit for breakfast usually, but sometimes lunch (only serve those two meals). Again, the food is creatively prepared and presented, and delicious. Fun people watching there with patrons like us (turistas), downtown employees, and art district folks. My husband jokes that he believes it's a portal to another dimension. Finally, what about the PepperMill? It's always a must do for us on our last morning in town before we head to the airport. OMG. I am so missing being able to visit LV.

    Hotel alphabet
I like Dave's suggestion to sort alphabetically. But I'd also suggest sorting them according to hotel first, i.e. all at Bellagio, all at Caesars, all at Cosmo, all at Bally's and so on. Organize the "other" (non hotel) locations alphabetically (Strip other, Downtown other, Henderson, etc. Wow, if you can, without getting a major headache.

    Hash House A Go Go
We really enjoy the Hash House A Go Go at the Plaza. Probably the same as the one at the Linq as well, but man, good food and huge portions. And it's not too terribly priced. And it doesn't matter what you get, breakfast lunch or dinner. My wife and I usually have to share.

We also really like Marilyn's Cafe at the Tuscany. Great food at great prices. Plus Tuscany comps are pretty easy to get and you can use them at Marilyn's.

  • Albert Pearson Sep-24-2020
    Andiamo
One of the best in town.

  • SoCalDude Sep-24-2020
    Khoury's
My family loves going to: Khoury's Mediterranean Restaurant - on Sahara near the Red Rock - when in town. Outstanding Middle Eastern food at fair prices. You can do far worse. You will be hard pressed to do much better.

  • T. Ferguson Sep-24-2020
    CASA DI AMORE
I second CASA DI AMORE. Wonderful atmosphere and food. But we always steer away from all overpriced strip 'dining' experiences.

  • JP Sep-24-2020
    Two at the Cosmopolitan
While I don't care for the casino at the Cosmopolitan, I've had several terrific dining "experiences" there, and highly recommend two restaurants--if they're still in business. First is Jaleo, a Jose Andres restaurant. One of the most fun meals I've ever had, and who doesn't love Jose Andres? Second is Estiatorio Milos, where Phil Helmuth was dining two tables down the banquette from us. My date hollered "Hey, poker player. What do you do with an inside straight?" I thought PH might verbally kill him, but he couldn't have been nicer or funnier. He made a joke, then chatted for a while. He told us we were in for a real dining treat, that this was one of his favorite places, and he was right. We had a great meal and Phil, with whom we were by then on a first-name basis, checked to make sure we loved the meal as we left. Only in Vegas!

    For an Old Time Feel
I was only there once when I still rented a car but I keep saying I want to go back to the Peppermill for the feel and the food, so that would be my suggestion.

  • Jahnke Sep-24-2020
    The Steakhouse at Circus Circus
Our favorite steakhouse in Las Vegas. Wonderful food and great ambiance.

  • Kevin Lewis Sep-24-2020
    A unique experience...
Is cramming down four Coney Island chili dogs at the D and then walking down Fremont Street, observing all the free "acts," such as the 400-pound guy wearing only a thong and playing the ukulele, and trying not to throw up. Where else can you experience that???

  • Sep-24-2020
    Vic & Anthony's at GN
Though I haven't eaten there yet, a lady I know would always make one trip with friends to Vic & Anthony's, the gourmet room at the Golden Nugget downtown, whenever she came to Vegas. She said it wasn't just that the food was good, but that they enjoyed their time so much.

  • Sep-24-2020
    Redwood Steakhouse at Cal
Let's nor forget about this good old standby, I think formerly called the "Redwood Grill". This was the place that had the "LVA Special": a steak dinner ending with an apple dumpling for $19.95. Very nice atmosphere.

  • Michael Crunk Sep-24-2020
    Any of these?
I have not been to these so I am asking; Rao’s at Caesars, Gordon Ramsey Steak, Nobu, Hell’s Kitchen? Any good sushi place?

  • CLIFFORD Sep-24-2020
    Fun
Stayed at the Suncoast many times and enjoyed all their Happy Hours,Regular priced meals, drink specials and the fabulous Du Pars. You can't beat it with lots of comps on food...Good Buffet. Best Bargain in the USA or is it USTrump...why is the ahole ORANGE? NOW I'VE SPPOILED MY DINNER...

  • Doug Bergman Sep-25-2020
    More diners please
Las Vegas still has a good collection of diners, or as we called them before Starbucks showed up on every corner, coffee shops. It's my favorite dining experience and is largely extinct in so many places. I like the bagel Cafe, bagelmania, and the coffee shop at the Klondike sunset. Also, Cantonese dim sum.

  • The Dr Sep-25-2020
    Best, but not "Fine"
If your looking for GOOD, QUALITY food. Try John Mull's Road Kill Grill. Excellent meat dishes. On Thom Blvd.

    A little German
    Hofbrauhaus is always fun.

Best Dining Experiences - Poll Preview
Our favorite dining experiences have been at the Steakhouse at Circus Circus (best bargain in town), Binion's Steakhouse, particularly with the Advisor coupon, Hash House A GoGo, but the one on Sahara, not the one at the Plaza, which has no ambiance, Jaleo at Cosmo for the wonderful staff (not that we'll be going again soon unless the Cosmo get its act together regarding the Covid), and the Capital Grill across from the Wynn, again the staff making it a wonderful experience. The wife just reminded me of the Hugo's Cellar at the Four Queens. Good food and wonderful staff.
