Question of the Day - 12 August 2023

Q:

Weather-wise, which are the best months to visit Las Vegas?

A:

For our money, the number-one best month of the year in Las Vegas is May.

March is fickle and flukey. Temperatures are noticeably warmer than the chilly days and cold nights of February. In March, it can rain on occasion and the winds, always a concern in Las Vegas, can be high. Many of the pools are still closed in March and you’re wise to bring a jacket for the inevitable cold snaps and evenings.

In April, the winds tend to subside and the weather is milder than March. The mean temperature in April is 64 degrees, quite comfortable, especially when the sun is shining; the average maximum is 78, which means temperatures can rise into the 80s, while the average minimum is 50. Most of the pools are open by April. You should still bring a sweater or light jacket, just in case it gets chilly in the evening.

But May -- ahhh. This month is just about perfect weather, with a mean temperature of 74 degrees, an average max of 88, and an average minimum of 60. This is Las Vegas at its best, the potentially cool days behind us and the sizzling heat of the summer still ahead. Hot weather can arrive with a vengeance at the end of the month, so mid-May, the second and third weeks, is best.

Summers in Las Vegas, as everyone knows, are hot hot HOT! And dry. June’s average-max temperature is 99, July’s is 105, and August’s is 102. The beating sun from high in the sky makes it feel even hotter. Also, the monsoon season goes from July through September, so rain can dampen things from time to time, in addition to the heat.

By September, the mean temperature is down to 80, though the average high is still up there at 95 degrees. But the evenings are balmy, with an average minimum of 65, the pools are open, and there’s little to no chance you’ll need a sweater or jacket -- except in the casinos, which get colder as the ambient temperatures get hotter.

In our opinion, the last week in September and the first week in October are a close second to mid-May for the best time to visit, weather-wise.

    I concur
April - May and September - October.

    In My Day
I can’t wait for the inevitable comments that “the weather just isn’t what it used to be back in the 90’s and 2000’s”. “In today’s Las Vegas the weather just doesn’t care about the gambler anymore, the weather just nickels and dimes the gambler to death.”

    Timing's shifted
20+ years ago, we expected the first 100-degree day to occur not before Memorial Day. Now, it happens in April. But the high winds of April still happen on schedule. So the window of pleasant weather is shorter now. The second half of May is usually full pizza oven now.

Likewise, September doesn't really cool off at all and it has to be well into October before it gets comfortable. My marker is the Sunset Park Renaissance Faire. It is (or was) held in early October, and recently, there have been numerous complaints that it's still too hot for all the elaborate and heavy costumes and such. Didn't used to be that way.

Good thing climate change is a liberal hoax, or I'd think all those recent insanely high temperatures were real.

    January to February 31st
Less folks which means less traffic. And, who doesn't like a cool evening when it's zero at home.

  • Kenneth Mytinger Aug-12-2023
    We got screwed this year
The temps usually start rising in March/April, out of the the "need a jacket" range. But this year it ~stayed~ cold; then directly to hot -- too hot.

Let's hope that we get a break, and get our pleasant Autumn temps.

(right around Thanksgiving, the temps will drop drastically, back to the "need a jacket" levels)

    the real answer
The best time to visit Las Vegas is when the weather there is better than the weather at home. Actually our spring and fall are pretty nice too, but Vegas weather is much better during the winter than than it is here. And, as Clifford says, it's less crowded. (And even summer's 105-110 heat isn't as bad as a humid 90-95)

    Clifford Is Close, But....
I'll take the second and third weeks in December.....by far. That is when the "Savvy LVA Members" go because that is by FAR the cheapest time of the year and weather is fine. You will likely se all rooms about half price or less. Weather is typically 50s at night and 70s during the day.

    Ditto
Clifford and Ludwig. Dec and Jan are Spring weather

  • David Miller Aug-12-2023
I agree with you. I have visited Vegas many times in the past during the December time frame you stated. I refrained from mentioning that time of the year because some might not agree because December can be much cooler than what they like.

    Except
While I do enjoy May in Vegas, wouldn't the correct answer be that it depends on what type of weather someone enjoys.

You hit the nail on the head.

'Good thing climate change is a liberal hoax'

Never waste a moment to bring in the woke liberal agenda.
Do you realize that the entire southwest, including las Vegas, was a shallow sea some 100's of millions of years ago? The northern US was tropical in many parts? Some serious climate change there, yep'em.

But let's play climate change. What are YOU doing Lewis about it? You eating a plant based-vegan diet? Look that one up alone on the impact on the environment and resources. How about not using any heat or AC? Not driving a car? You gave up plastic of course given the obvious there? You of course don't dare use an electronic device like a computer or phone to type your comments because of cobalt mining in parts of Africa using child labor in ugly conditions and stripping the land, right?

I'd bet you don't do any of that, just complain whine about it, hollow concerns, don't walk the walk, just like the climate types who fly on their private jet to climate talks.

You "hit the nail on the head". I find it amazing that those who come across as all knowing and spout this nonsense don't recognize their own hypocrisy. Typical...

  • AL Aug-12-2023
    You're all wrong! :-)
The best month to visit Las Vegas is November, period. The summer heat in Nevada and California lasts well into October; the heat often isn't gone until November arrives. November is mild, but not yet cold like December is. And the clear 2nd-best month, not far behind, is April, because all the cold of winter is gone, but the summer heat hasn't yet arrived. And the clear 3rd-best month is March. You folks who think that 88 is a nice temperature, you're nuts. 88 is HOT, not desirable. I much prefer temps below 75, absolutely below 80. Over 80 is just too hot. Cold temps aren't as bad as hot temps because you just bundle up a bit and you're fine; in hot temps, you can't do a corresponding "un-bundling" to make yourself cooler. You folks who like temps over 80, you can have them all to yourselves. :-)

'those who come across as all knowing and spout this nonsense don't recognize their own hypocrisy.'

    Right on David.

Can't even keep a simple QOD about Las Vegas weather without someone interjecting such a thing. For better or worse, I can't help but point out the hypocrisy, hard to stay silent.

    October or March
October because College Football, the NFL and MLB are all in full swing. March because March Madness is a great time to be out there. Oh and the weather is those months is pretty good too.

100 million years ago the North American continent was in the southern hemisphere so most people should expect the climate to have been different and changed.

    December
Many years ago, I dragged my Vegas-hating spouse to the city in December. I had some good offers from some nice Strip hotels, so decided it was a good chance to try to convert said spouse.
It was nice - 50s - in the daytime sun but, or course, it got cold at night. I spent the whole week listening to,
    “Why is it so cold?”
    “Because it’s December.”
“But we’re in the desert! Why is it so cold?”
    “Because it’s winter.”
“But why is it so cold in the desert?”
    “Because it’s WINTER!!”
“But we’re in the desert. Why is it……..”
    Aaarrrggghhh!!!
