Question of the Day - 06 May 2024

Q:

I love watching movies set or partially set in Vegas. Taking a straw poll amongst all your office workers, what are the top-10 favorites?

A:

Frankly, there aren't enough office workers for a poll to have any statistical significance, not to mention that half of them are under the age of 25 and haven't seen the flicks that we fossils fancy.

Thus, we combined the poll with our own favorites and some of the best-movies lists, in order to come up with a top 10.

Feel free to weigh in on your own choices of movies "set or partially set" in Las Vegas (i.e., whether there's gambling or not).

If enough of y'all participate and would like, we'll run a poll. Believe it or not, we've never surveyed the readership on Vegas-based films, only the best gambling movies, and that was way back in 2009.

Here ya go.

10. Vegas Vacation

9. Honeymoon in Vegas

8. Last Vegas

7. Viva Las Vegas

6. The Hangover

5. Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas

4. Leaving Las Vegas

3. Ocean's 11 (1960)

2. Ocean's Eleven (2001)

1. Casino

    More movies
It wasn't a very good film (neither was "Vegas Vacation") but I think "21" should be in the top 10 just because it was based on a true story.

A better list would be movies that had 1 or 2 good scenes in Las Vegas. "Swingers", "The Godfather", "Lost in America" (THE FUNNIEST SCENE set in Las Vegas), Rain Man", "Mars Attacks", and "Diamonds Are Forever" come to mind. They all have 1 or 2 great scenes set in Las Vegas.

    Even more movies
There's a few movies that have their final scene(s) in Las Vegas. "Jason Bourne", "Midnight Run", "Con Air", "Honey I Blew Up The Kid".

    A couple more
I won' t quibble about the basic top ten Vegas movie list you came up with - but here's a couple more. The last scene of Bob and Carol and Ted and Alice has them walking thru and leaving the actual Riviera Hotel which isnt even there anymore and Las Vegas Lady which dealt with a casino robbery and had a lot of footage including great actual rappelling scenes at Circus Circus. I'll second Diamonds are Forever too - great chase scene down Fremont St and I drove to Henderson to see the real funeral home depicted as Slumber Inc.

    Rain Man?
Heck, it was even referenced in one of the movies on the posted list. Dustin Hoffman was excellent in that movie.

    Kinda Vegas
"The Cooler", staring William H. Macy as a down-and-out on luck guy. Hired to roam the tables with uncanny ability to turn 'hot' tables cold. Mostly filmed in Reno, but maybe some Downtown footage; closing credits backed with Vegas implosions including Aladdin, Dunes.

Must give credit to "Vegas Vacation" for how much actual Vegas is in it. I love it. Cousin Eddie patting Wayne Newton's hair and offering to be his bodyguard; Clark checking into the Mirage with his ink-stained arm from his and Ellen's 'mile high club' debacle, telling the agent it came from his leaking ink pen; Clark's battle with the blackjack dealer (forget his name); the 'downtown' casino with tables for 'Guess The Number", "Guess Which Hand", and best of all "Rock, Paper, Scissors." So funny.

    Best of all
My vote would go to Mars Attacks--I was only at the Landmark once before it was closed and imploded but the scene in the movie where they show the actual footage of the demise of that hotel is worth the price of admission and would be at the top of my list!

where do poll results live these days?
I used to be able to find archived poll results. I can't find it anymore. Can someone enlighten me? Thanks.

    A little higher
While not an good film objectively, I feel Vegas Vacation should be a tad bit higher on the list. Just hits on a lot of "tourist"vegas. Also highlights the absurdity of the family era of Vegas

    Personal additions to the list
Like all poll questions, everybody will want to add/change it. I enjoyed ALL the Oceans movies (8, 11, 11, 12, 13, were there more?) and don't forget the second movie with Sandra Bullock as the beauty queen that was mostly set in Vegas. Loved her tackling Dolly Parton cause she thinks she's a copy she is looking for, and her getting trapped in the Treasure Island pirate ship as it sinks! If I could just recall the name of it!

Mostly agree with your movie picks
I would replace Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas with the delightful Ocean’s 8 (2018), with an all-star female cast — Sandra Bullock, Cate Blanchett, Anne Hathaway, Sarah Paulson, Helena Bonham Carter, Rihanna, Awkwafina, Mindy Kaling, Dakota Fanning, Katie Holmes, even Marlo Thomas!

    Movies
Agree , Lost in America, the casino with a heart…..my husband and I still laugh at that one. Honeymoon in Vegas…..It’ very important that I win (don’t we all think that?). I love all the movies with just a scene or too. Candy, that movie was Miss Congeniality II. A great show would be to combine all the snippets for us Vegas lovers. Even Dan Tana (sp) had some great scenes of vintage Vegas.

  • Eddie Maloney May-06-2024
    21
I believe part of that movie was filmed in MGM, RR etc.

  • PaulaNH May-06-2024
    Movies
    That would be two….sorry!

  • Llew May-06-2024
    Sandra Bullock movie
That would be Ms Congeniality 2.

  • Scott May-06-2024
    Switch
Take out "Last Vegas" and "Fear and Loathing" and replace with "The Cooler" and "Hard Eight".

    Thanks Brent Peterson

You missed the greatest movie ever made- Showgirls.

  • Mark Bashore May-06-2024
    Missing Gem
If you play poker and have a keen sense of humor, you have to include The Grand.

  • Hoppy May-06-2024
    Lucky You
Filmed at Binions Horseshoe. Not saying it's the best. Drew Barrymore is certainly worth it.

  • asaidi May-06-2024
    Oceans 8?
Oceans 8 didn't have any scenes in Las Vegas. It was set in New York City at the Met Gala.

  • Lovegas95 May-06-2024
    Another Ine
    Wild Card with Jason Statham.

  • Jimmy Cat May-06-2024
    Add this to your list...
A solid agreement with "Casino" as the #1 Vegas movie (they were listed in order, right?) But I would have to add "Meet Me In Las Vegas". An oldie, for sure, but lots of gambling, the legs of Cyd Charisse, and even a brief cameo of Sinatra playing the slots!

  • AyeCarambaPoker May-06-2024
    Dodgeball
    What about Dodgeball as well?

Can’t believe no one has mentioned Bugsy,

    Most Vegas movies...
...stink, because they are incredibly unrealistic about how things work in Las Vegas. I know some liberties must be taken for dramatic/comedic purposes, but most come off as having been written by people who have zero knowledge at all.

Of the "Vegas movies" I've seen, the original Ocean's 11 and Diamonds are forever are terrific for their nostalgia; and Casino for the incredible script, direction, art direction, and acting.

  • tujacs May-09-2024
    Vegas movies
Gotta include William Macey in "the Cooler"!

  • Diana Thorpe May-09-2024
    another option
I enjoyed seeing Vegas in Mars Attacks! It's not about Vegas, but it was fun to see Vegas in the movie.

  • Teeye May-10-2024
    A Golden Oldie
    I loved Corvette Summer.
