Question of the Day - 18 March 2021

Q:

What’s the best video poker for someone trying to learn more, but has played a lot? Jacks or better? Deuces Wild? Double Double Bonus?

A:

[Editor's Note: For this answer, we went directly to the source, Bob Dancer.]

“Best” game means different things to different people. For example, comparing Jacks or Better with Double Double Bonus is like comparing an easy drive with a roller coaster. JoB is not very exciting. DDB is very exciting. Different people have different preferences.

Each of the three games you mention comes in good pay schedules and bad. “Good” means close to or greater than 100% if you play perfectly. “Bad” means the return is quite a bit less than that.

The stakes you play for also matter. Generally speaking, nickel and lower games return less than games for quarters and dollars. Sometimes the pay schedules stay the same as you go up to higher stakes than dollars. Sometimes not.

To complicate things further, every casino has a different mix of games. Expecting to learn one game and to play it everywhere is naïve.

So first of all decide, where you'll be playing. Then go to the website www.vpfree2.com and check out the best games at that casino. This website isn’t 100% accurate, but it’s a good place to start. Pick one of the higher-returning games where you plan to play.

If you want written explanations of why some hands are played one way and some another, the Dancer/Daily Winner’s Guide series is the way to go. There are six books in all, but you can buy them one at a time.

Finally, since you’ve played a lot and you want to get better, likely you’ve developed some bad habits. The best place to correct them is by using tutorial software, such as Video Poker for Winners. You have no idea how badly you're playing until a computer corrects you.

    Dear Bob
While I can understand your need to hawk your products but in answering such a question don't you think you should have referenced other books and programs? You even alluded to the problem when you said "“Best” game means different things to different people."
Which also means best video poker books and software better suit different people and NONE are significantly better than any other.
A few references to other products would have allowed people to explore and eventually chose which product suits their needs best. As an instructor in teaching your products you should have discovered that your products are not suited for everyone and neither is anyone elses.

Jackie, When I attended College, It seemed like every class I took the book we used was written by the professor teaching the class.

    The best
Video poker for winners starts out with the basics, goes to intermediate and ends up in expert play. I always remember a line in the winners guide for jacks or better, it’s simple but it’s not easy. VideoPoker.com,, wizard of odds and all others are great but nothing gets down to basics like VPW. The books, software and players card are a perfect package. Attend a few classes to realize you still don’t know everything and you’ll shudder when you see someone hold a three card royal and dump a pair of high cards. But you used to do the same thing before VPW. Bob is correct to recommend his product because of its quality. And I doubt it will change his income.

    Misconceptions
I was hip deep in studying everything about every gambling game long before Bob Dancer even existed as a VP tutor. I never found any of his products nor methodology to be of any better use than products that existed long before his debut upon the scene of gambling authors, products that no longer exist mainly due to his marketing skills.
I am a professional live poker player and only play VP as a distraction awaiting a live game as enduring the tedium of chasing the ever elusive royal to be a waste of my time and bankroll and incapable of producing a living income. Living meaning enjoying other pursuits than siting for hours upon no end pushing a machines buttons. Although I can comprehend the attraction of it that gathers thousands to Bob's knee. All I'm saying is that other systems are equally productive and may be better understood than his as the greatest fallacy in our culture is that "One Size Fits All".

BTW JohnK I never experienced that in my University attendance.

    Don't be silly
Jackie, if you owned a business it wouldn't be very successful if you sent potential customers to a competitor. Even is the products were very similiar.

    ooh! a swordfight.
I understand what Bob said and also what Jackie is saying. (By the way, Jackie, I agree that my professors didn't write the books in my classes either). But really, the correct answer is 1) Any game is fine if you enjoy it and know the strategy, so 2) get and learn strategy cards. 3) Get one or more of the many books that explain the best ways to play and the payback %'s. And 4) buy some computer software to practice. There is nothing wrong with touting your own publications, so maybe the last paragraph could be a commercial for his own. You certainly don't need to mention competitors products by name, but acknowledge that there ARE many choices.

    THE OLD SAYING
Casinos do not exist to make video poker players... RICH !

    Best game
I would say JOB Deuces strategy is also relatively.
Vpfree is not 100% accurate because people do not email changes when they send them

    Wow... Just wow.
Of course, Bob is going to reference his own products and I find it surprising that some are surprised by that. He's made a successful career out of VP, both as a player and as a teacher, and it's only natural that he'd recommend his own products.. He is, after all, a businessman. If you own a restaurant, you don't send potential customers down the street to one of your competitors.

As for college professors using their own books in class, you see some of that at the undergrad level, but there's an ample supply of texts covering the fundamentals so it's not too common. Where you see much more of that is in grad school and beyond, especially where new ground is being broken.

    Software Video poker for Winners
When will you ever make this software so we can use & practice on our iPad? Most of us don’t even have a laptop anymore

  • O2bnVegas Mar-18-2021
Santa did it and got locked up
Santa Claus directed a Macy's customer to Gimbels for the same toy at a lower price. Everyone knows the rest...including Santa being locked up in a mental institution. LOL

If Bob didn't think his stuff was sufficient to help the OP on his journey to "learn more" without offering a whole bibliography of VP literature and tutorials, that would be...well...strange.

    Best Options
For positive expected value video poker:

    1. Deuces Wild with the pay schedule(100.76%): 1-2-2-3-5-9-15-25-200-800. Known as FPDW or full-pay Deuces wild. It's only available at Sam's Town and Arizona Charlie's.

    2. Double Bonus(DB) with this pay schedule(100.17%): 1-1-3-5-7-10-50-80-160-50-800. It's pretty widely available in Las Vegas, but not on The Strip

For less than positive expected value:

    1. Deuces Wild with the pay schedule(99.73%): 1-2-3-4-4-10-16-25-200-800. Known as NSUD or not-so-ugly-ducks. Availability similar to DB.

    2. Jacks Or Better with the pay schedule(99.54%): 1-2-3-4-6-9-25-50-800. Know as JOB, obviously. It's widely available, but on The Strip only at $1+ at MGM and $5+ at Bellagio, Caesars, Cosmo, Wynn, and Encore.

If you were to learn any(or all 4!), you would be a tough player for casinos to win money from. Bob often discusses the finer points, but they will make more sense when the grunt work of learning to play "perfectly" is accomplished.

I was surprised and a little disappointed that Dancer took what I consider undue advantage of the bully pulpit handed him by the LVA. I thought it unseemly. Of course, it's possible LVA has a vested interest and encouraged him. I haven't checked its "Shop" offerings for his products.
