Is it just me, or have there been more numerous large jackpots hit in Las Vegas lately. Most recently the Megabucks. Seems a little odd, since visitors and play are both down considerably. Just wondering.
We say probably not. Perhaps more are being reported by casinos desperate for good news to portray and media hungry for the same.
But Megabucks getting so high is precisely because it hasn't been hit for so long. It reached the $15.5 million level after going for nearly two years before being hit on Christmas Eve at Suncoast. And the last time was for $13+ million (in April 2019 at Sunset Station), so Megabucks has been hit only three times in nearly four years.
That said, it's true that various jackpots have been hit over the past few months. Two Wheel of Fortune jackpots, one for $3.8 million at the Hyatt up at north Lake Tahoe and another for $437,000 at the Cosmo, were hit with a few days of each other in late September. A nearly $1 million Pai Gow Progressive prize was claimed at Planet Hollywood in mid-November. A bad-beat jackpot was distributed from the Santa Fe Station poker room on the day after Christmas. And we were tickled to see a Buffalo Stampede progressive jackpot collected at Ellis Island last Tuesday for $905,000 by a longtime local player.
In our Vegas News on this site, we report only major dollar amounts, generally a million or more, though less if more than one has been hit in close proximity to the other others, as in the case of the two WoF prizes in September, or if it's close enough to a mil, like the one at Ellis Island. Still, all in all, we don't see any notable uptick in jackpots of late.
