Question of the Day - 14 June 2019

Q:

I know that progressive slot jackpots can't begin to compare with the big multi-state lottery records, but how close do they come? I guess my question is, what's the biggest slot jackpot ever hit?

A:

The largest slot jackpot in history was hit on a dollar Megabucks machine in April 2003 at Excalibur for $39,710,826.36. So you're right: That isn't even in the same ballpark with the $1.5 billion MegaMillions jackpot hit last October -- a mere 2.6%. But it's among the biggest payouts in Las Vegas of all time.

The Megabucks was hit by a 25-year-old software engineer from Los Angeles, in town to watch the NCAA basketball tournament. The man opted to remain anonymous, but it was reported that his birth date contained three 7s and an 11.

Unlike most major jackpot winners, he didn't take the lump sum, receiving a little less than $1.6 million a year for the next 25 years before taxes.

    Lotto
The one that for some reason always bothered me was the arrogant football player pulling down $25 million per year won a huge lotto jackpot on a whim. I guess it bothered me because he certainly didn't need it and bragged about it. Most winners don't want the attention for obvious reasons.
