I’ve got tickets to the Billy Joel concert in February and I’m staying downtown. My question is should I drive my party from downtown to Allegiant Stadium, with regards to how much time should I plan for getting there and how much is parking? Or would it be better to take a taxi or a ride-share based on availability and pricing? How difficult is it going to be to get a taxi or ride share after the concert? I seem to recall reading about taxi zone pricing. In other words, what’s the most economical way for a round trip and how much time to get there and any additional pertinent information?
We don’t recommend driving yourself and parking. Traffic is pretty ferocious in the vicinity in the lead up to major events at the stadium. And with the concert at 8 p.m. on a Saturday night, you'll have the usual jammed Strip to deal with as well.
Also, parking at the stadium and nearby isn't cheap. It starts at $45 (Lot T) and escalates to $50 (V Garage, Lots U, V), topping out at $80 for Lot X.
MGM Resorts provides special-event pricing at its casino garages and this can be a relative bargain, depending on the event. It’s too soon for MGM to post Billy Joel prices, but here’s what MGM charged for the November 6 Rolling Stones concert at Allegiant: from $20 (Excalibur) and $25 (Mandalay Bay Convention Center, Luxor) to $60 (Delano). Keep in mind that you still have to hoof it a ways (upwards of a mile) from the garages to your seats in the stadium.
As for taxis and ride shares, Nevada Department of Business & Industry Public Information Officer Teri Williams could offer no predictions, saying, “That’s generally driven by demand. They might modify their operations based on crowds,” ease of access, etc. Smart taxicab companies and ride-share drivers would have a big opportunity to cash in on the concert, but nothing has been predictable about these industries of late. Demand for cabs is up, Williams says, but companies are generally meeting it.
As pertains to fares (not counting surcharges and surge pricing), TaxiFareFinder.com calculates a trip from Circa downtown to Allegiant Stadium as costing $27.58. According to RideGuru, the same trip would cost you $15 on Uber and $16 on Lyft. However, we’ve experienced so many vicissitudes with ride-sharing services, especially in Las Vegas during the pandemic, that we would play it safe and hail a cab.
As for timing, it depends on how you go. It's certainly advisable to allow a couple of hours till concert time if you're taking a taxi or ride-share. If you're driving and parking in a garage on the south Strip, you could cut it a little closer, but why risk messing up the big night by being stingy with your arrival time?
As for getting back to downtown, that'll be less stressful (no time limit), but perhaps no less of a schlep. You could always walk back to the Strip and catch a bus. Be sure to dress warmly; it'll be cold that late at night in February. You can also walk back to the Strip and get in a cab line at MBay or Luxor. Of you could walk all the way to MGM Grand and catch the Monorail to the Sahara, where it might be easier to get a taxi.
If all this sounds like speculation, that's exactly what it is. the one thing we can say for sure is, whatever you do, give yourself plenty of time both ways.
If we were in the same position, we'd probably drive down and park at Luxor or Mandalay Bay.
