When we were in Las Vegas in September 1973, we remember being in a glass-enclosed elevator that was on the outside of a building on Fremont Street. Any idea what building this could be?
Sure we do. This is an easy one. It was the elevator at Binion's that went non-stop to the Top of Binion's steakhouse.
The view wasn't the same after the Fremont Street Experience's crooning canopy was completed in December 1995. Between then and when the elevator stopped working some time ago, it overlooked the top of the canopy, rather than Glitter Gulch in all its neon glory.
So one glass elevator is down. But there are others in Las Vegas.
The Tropicana has one that goes to the top of the Island Tower. It overlooks the big pool area and, of course, you can see beyond, looking west at Excalibur and the Spring Mountains.
The Rio's glass elevator goes up the south side of the big tower to the VooDoo lounge and restaurant.
Another goes up the Delano at Mandalay Bay to the Skyfall Lounge; you can see a quickie video of the trip here.
The Palms’ 40-story tower, not the one with the Ghostbar, has a glass elevator to its top floors; it used to go to the Playboy Club when that was at the top, but now, as far as we know, it's a private elevator to the private suites up there.
Palace Station’s glass elevator faces north, offering views of Stratosphere and the downtown area. It's restricted to hotel guests.
The Westgate has a glass elevator in the north tower.
Finally, Sam's Town has glass elevators that face the inside atrium.
