Question of the Day - 28 August 2018

Q:

Are there any plans to renovate or demolish the long-closed hotel associated with Binion’s casino?

A:
We answered this same question about a year ago and since then, nothing has changed.

Binion's General Manager Tim Lager says that the owners of Binion’s has ideas they'd like to execute, but a renovation of that scale would be very expensive. Lager implied that it would require outside investment, saying the company had been talking to several parties, trying to drum up interest.

“It’s a big priority for us,” Lager told us, and he hopes to have something to announce in the next two to three months. But for the moment, the status quo prevails.

Looking on the bright side, Lager didn’t say a thing about demolition, so we can strongly presume that the hotel tower’s survival is assured.

And Tim Lager promised we'd be the first to know when Binion's has something more to add.

    Asbestos?
I rather suspect that place is full of asbestos and any renovation OR demolition would be prohibitively expensive.

    Asbestos
Several podcasts have speculated that reopening them would require renovations that include asbestos removal. Therefore, demolition is more likely. But since that would be prohitively expensive, the unused hotel will remain - unused - until the hotel AND casino are demolished.

    survival is assured?
Really? Just because a spokesperson doesn't "mention" demolition does not imply tower survival. And in Las Vegas, decisions can come quickly. Things will drag on for years and then, boom! (pardon the implication). And when someone says they "hope" to have an announcement in 2 or 3 months doesn't seem any more certain.

    Other problems too....
The tower was topped out in 1965, so lead and asbestos go without saying. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Mint_Las_Vegas
It's visible in the background in the movie "In Cold Blood" (1967) where the Kansas agents pick up the Clutter killers at the police station; but wasn't there when the actual event took place in 1959.
I've also heard that apart from the contamination issues, the plumbing and HVAC are in bad shape from many years of--ah--"deferred"--maintenance under the various owners, and would be very expensive to bring up to modern standards.
I stayed there several times in the old days, but haven't been back since they charged me for parking on the way out after spending the entire afternoon in the casino.
