Question of the Day - 10 December 2021

Q:

What can you tell us about the building Caesars and Blake Shelton are planning to build in front of Bally's that I saw on the local news? It’s a hideous-looking four-story barn.

A:

What’s horrifying you is Ole Red, a 27,000-square-foot honky-tonk planned for the Grand Bazaar Shops (which, architecturally speaking, may soon be the Grand Bizarre Shops). It’s a joint venture between Shelton and Ryman Hospitality, a publicly traded corporation that runs the Grand Ole Opry. It will be their fifth collaboration.

Budgeted at $30 million, Ole Red will offer 686 seats worth of dining, as well as two floors dedicated to spectator space for a performance stage. Adds Eater Las Vegas, “The 4,500-square-foot rooftop also plans to offer music, food, and beverage with views of the city.”

Shelton’s rationale for bringing Ole Red to the Strip was articulated as follows during a press conference: “At some point, after you’ve seen enough magic tricks and casinos, sometimes you just want to hear some damn country music.” And eat some Pig n Cheese with fried bologna, perhaps. Other gastronomic items on the Ole Red menu will probably include Redneck Nachos with kettle chips, Southern tater tot poutine with a fried egg and bacon-wrapped meatloaf, to say nothing of chicken-fried steak. The cheese of preference will be Velveeta.

Las Vegas will be the biggest platform by far for Ole Red, which can also be found in Tishomingo, Oklahoma, Shelton’s home town, as well as in Nashville, Gatlinburg and Orlando. The Vegas branch is set to open in 2023.

We agree that the rendering makes the venue appear, shall we say, less than inviting. See for yourself in the photo below.

    How could anyone. . .
Think that idea will make money? Seems like a very niche market.

    Bring it On!
As long as it's reasonably priced, bring it on, it could be just what the doctor ordered, in an area where everything is expensive, to have am inexpensive, unpretentious place to kick up your shoes and just have a nice, time. More themed places, more cheap buffets, less resort fees, less paid parking, more family fun!!

    Could be good
If the prices are reasonable and they restore the old Barbary Coast across the street. Then it would start to resemble the type of Strip I could go to again.

    Looks good to me!
I think that this can be a successful addition to the Las Vegas restaurant scene.

First of all, "hideous-looking" is in the eye of the beholder and I don't think it is hideous. Second, it sounds like they have a well-thought out positioning, C&W theme with food to match. If they don't fall into the obvious traps, like trying to create a "hillbilly Chuck-E Cheese" or crazy high pricing, I think it has a good shot as being successful.

It is a niche market, but so is Joël Robuchon, who is at the other end of the spectrum. I believe that Vegas has more than enough traffic to support this niche. C&W is a MUCH larger niche than Joël Robuchon's super affluent target market.

    I say go for it!
Based on the little information that I have I'd say it has a better than average chance of success.

    Not hideous
Except for the signage, it's quite attractive.

    very optimistic rendering
    an escalator that works?

  • Brent Dec-10-2021
    LOL these comments
I'm not going to argue about whether it's hideous. (I mean, of course it is, but some people clearly like the 30-year-old-suburban-strip-mall aesthetic, so I won't judge).

But I'm dying laughing at these "as long as its reasonably priced" comments.

It's a celebrity restaurant. It will be located on some of the most expensive real estate in the U.S. It will be aimed a a specific demographic that is known for its brand loyalty.

The prices are going to be OUTRAGEOUS!

    ole red
we'll see but maybe they'll use a smoker to overwhelm the pot smell in that area

  • RichM Dec-10-2021
Maybe if every week was this week
About half the people at Paris and Caesars are wearing cowboy hats.

  • CLIFFORD Dec-10-2021
    OH My!
Proves a blind pig will find a peanut butter & banana sandwich somewhere...for $14.00?

  • Toad Dec-10-2021
    No way
No way the food and drinks will not be over priced. Being on The Strip in a main tourist area and town prices will be very high. And for what sounds like mostly nasty food. Bring on the chicken fried steak though.

    As the saying goes
if you can make it in Tishomingo, you can make it anywhere.

And, is it even possible to make the front of Bally's look worse? I would say no. So knock yourself out.

  • Eggheaddoggy Dec-10-2021
    Too funny
jeepbeer and Randall Ward your comments are great.

Who'll be the lucky patrons on the second floor to get a great view of who knows what is happening on the pedestrian bridge: bottled (tap) water for sale, other items for purchase, other forms of entertainment (whether intentional or not).

In all seriousness, if it can clean up that area in front of Bally's I am all for it. That area is an obstacle course for evading people trying to make a buck one way or another, while trying to get to/from pedestrian bridge

  • Gregory Dec-10-2021
    Ole Red
If this were Ole Blue instead, it would look a lot like the old Imperial Palace.

  • Roy Furukawa Dec-10-2021
    Reasonable Prices :D
I highly doubt anything on the Strip will be reasonably priced. Just the real estate taxes for the property it sits on is too expensive and it’s not like that isn’t passed on to the consumer. And that’s not even factoring in corporate greed.

    Fried bologna
Fried bologna in butter and white onions? When do they open! Remember when White Castle opened?

  • AL Dec-10-2021
    Barn?
Why would anybody call this building a barn? It doesn't look anything like a barn, especially because it has a flat top instead of a wedge-shaped top, but also because the basic structure of a barn is absent. And the architectural style is modernist urban, not rural. "barn" is a total misnomer.

    Those Bizarro shops
How much of their space will be taken up by this new joint? Will most.. hopefully all.. of it disappear? (Except retain space for Giordano's !! )
