Question of the Day - 09 May 2022

Q:

What can you tell me about the Boardwalk Casino?

A:

We're tickled to see that the Boardwalk, one of the more distinct hotel-casinos on the old Strip, is still remembered. We have a lot of fond memories about the dive.

The Boardwalk started life in 1966 as a six-story 140-room Holiday Inn; it was located on six acres approximately where the Waldorf Astoria tower now sits. Throughout the '70s and '80s, the Holiday Inn was known variously as Holiday Inn South and Holiday Inn South Strip, to avoid confusion with other Holiday Inns around town, including the Holiday Inn Center Strip, now Harrah's. In 1985s, it was renamed the Viscount.

The Viscount name is barely remembered, having lasted only four years; in 1989, the property was rebranded the Boardwalk, and sometimes referred to as the Holiday Inn Boardwalk and Boardwalk Holiday Inn.

The Boardwalk underwent some improvements over the next half-decade or so. The roller coaster was added to give the property a "Coney Island"-style carnival facade, but neither that nor the Ferris-wheel ride were real and the 1906 parachute-jump ride was non-operational, which was probably just as well.

A 15-floor 410-room tower, along with a casino expansion, new snack bar, showroom, and parking garage, was completed in 1996.

In late 1997, Mirage Resorts bought the Boardwalk for $100 million, with some adjacent vacant land that went for $25 million. Mirage continued to run the Boardwalk and after MGM acquired Mirage Resorts, it dropped the Holiday Inn part of the name. It also doomed the old property, which became part of the plan for CityCenter, and MGM closed it in early 2006; the hotel tower was imploded in May of that year. Today, part of the City Center parking garage and part of the Waldorf Astoria occupy that land.

We remember the Boardwalk for its 10-cent roulette, bargains in the coffee shop, the Prince cover band Purple Reign, and the Surf Buffet, which went to 24 hours in 2003 for the ridiculously cheap (by today's standards) price of $5.95.

    Memories
I remember the place well from my early trips to Vegas. It was the first place where a pit boss/host gave me his card. I was there one night with some friends one of whom had a lot more money than me. We were playing the low-level BJ table. We were all winning but suddenly he put out a very high bet for those days. the tables stopped and the thought he did something wrong. I had to explain to him that at a place like that it would require the pit box to come over and say okay. I also remember the buffet was one of the worst in Vegas

    Heat
I loved this place but the heat there was worse than the El Cortez. A green chip bet might as well been a purple in their eyes. Tub craps game was great but they didn’t like any dice setting. Buffet was unbelievably bad and but I ate it every time I was in town.

    commercials
I remember William "The Refrigerator" Perry did commercials for their buffet. Being a Bears fan I thought it was cool. But even The Fridge wasn't enough for me try it.

I believe that was the first player's club card I ever got. One time I had a room facing Bellagio's fountains and could watch the show from my room. Also, watch the helicopter ride take off and land. The cigar shop with live cigar rolling.

    Worst buffet ever!
Yep, 30 years later, I still remember that buffet. It was cheap in all aspects, so I got what I paid for, but the memory lingers to this very day

Wasn't the Boardwalk previously known as the Slot Joint. I remember going there for a full spaghetti dinner for $1.00 and this included salad and garlic bread. They also had stew in a bread bowl. This would have been in the mid 80's.

    I Remember the place!
Great memories of that joint, It was a fun place, kind of creepy clown at the entrance, All the strip was a fun place at that time, to bad it all went corporate and sterile and there is now an effort to charge you even for breathing in their casinos.

This in via email from Allan
Thank you so much for your answer to my question on the Boardwalk Casino.
I especially enjoyed the comments that were made.
I remember their roullete was very low compared to other places.
I got a lesson in casino etiquette there having to do with money.
A player threw some money onto the table.
The dealer picked it up and handled it to make it all face up.
The player (Asian) got very upset. The dealer explained that he, and the pit boss had to see the faces.
Player was still very upset. He lost and did it again. And again the pit boss stopped and turned all of the cash face up. Lost again.
    Walked away VERY UNHAPPY.
There was a smaller show room off to the left. Good for afternoon shows.
It also was a place you could get cotton candy!
Thanks again for answering the question so quickly.

    Boardwalk Casino
I remember going and the sodas were handed out in souvenir plastic Coke cups. I still have a couple of them.

The boardwalk is where I learned that being inexpensive doesn't necessarily make it worth purchasing. The Boardwalk's featured 99-cent Turkey Dinner may have been the most disgusting thing I have ever attempted to eat. It was served on a styrofoam tray by a very unhappy-looking person and had 2 slices of turkey (?) loaf, a scoop of mashed something, and mystery gravy. Delish. I recall eating about 2 bites and tossing it into the garbage.

    what a bunch of snobs
I guess if you don't overpay the expensive joints for their buffets, it must be bad! The Boardwalk was one of the few places on the strip where you got a fair shake. Low limits, cheap food, pleasant staff, but, yes, it's NOT Caesars. Purple Reign was outstanding, the rooms were adequate. We renewed our vows there for our 25th (in the gazebo out back. I'll bet you snobs didn't even know they HAD an out back). Elvis (Eddie Powers) did the officiating. We had the dinner at the buffet, without complaints, the staff took care of the cake topper for us, our cake was from Freed's Bakery. In 2002, it was the most we could afford, but spending 3 times the money for another place would not have increased our enjoyment. And, we had been there many times before the vow renewal, so we did choose to go there. It remains one of our favorite memories of our trips to Las Vegas. Their small race & Sports book was also a friendly place to wager.

    So
Sounds like Circus Circus, but what came first?

    Cool Place
I never stayed there but I played there every trip. It had a fun vibe.

    Ah! 2003
Just after the buffet went 24/7, I was desperate for food at 4:00 AM. The kind folks at Bellagio directed me to the Boardwalk. I went upstairs to the buffet and stood in line for a made-to-order custom omelet. Just what I needed when I needed it. Good memories.

    Visited it once
Never went there when I lived in Las Vegas, but when we went with my brother and his wife, we stopped by. They had large hot dogs and I believe ice cream sundaes cheap.

    Visited it once
Just remembered. It was foot long hot dogs and strawberry shortcake as their draws.

    Worst Food - Toss Up
Worst food ever eaten in Vegas - Surf Buffet at Boardwalk, or anything other than pie at the Western café. Both options very dangerous, and both are now in the Vegas archives!

    UNKNOWN COMIC
back in the mid 90's my family had the pleasure of seeing the UNKNOWN COMIC at boardwalk. Showroom was oversized closet and there were 6 people in the audience. We still laugh about it to this day
