Are there any plans to reopen casino buffets -- Harrahs, Flamingo, etc. -- in the near future since COVID numbers are now decreasing?
We get this question all the time, a reflection of how popular the Las Vegas buffet has always been and, the reduced numbers notwithstanding, still is.
Even though the pandemic is receding in most places, which will change the situation in Las Vegas somewhat, we feel pretty confident in our answer that we don't see too many more buffets reopening anytime soon. Indeed, the likelihood that the buffets will return to any Caesars Entertainment properties, as well locals casinos, is slim.
Management of Station Casinos has indicated, numerous times, in various ways, to different interested parties, that what it calls its "money-losing" buffets are gone for good. We're still not 100% sure if that means all of them or just the ones that weren't profitable, but the more time that passes, the more it seems like it refers to all of them.
Boyd Gaming announced nearly a year ago that there are no plans to reopen any more of its buffets than the one they did deign to bring back, Main Street Station's Garden Court Buffet.
We reported in June 2021, nearly a year ago, that Caesars Entertainment stated it would reopen "a few more" besides the fancy Bacchanal Buffet at Caesars Palace, but that's the last we heard a word about its buffets. (Frankly, we don't miss those at Harrah's or the Flamingo.)
Earlier in the pandemic, we predicted that perhaps 50% of Las Vegas buffets would be sacrificed to the bottom line, but so far it's more like 75% and holding steady.
