Question of the Day - 16 November 2019

Q:
I recently applied for and received a Caesars Rewards credit card (initially for free LV parking and a limited-time enhanced sign-up bonus). The additional benefits through the card top out at $10k yearly spend. After quickly hitting that level (don't carry a balance), I'm about to switch cards until next year. I gamble a lot of short-duration low table limits at a local (non-NV) Harrah's. Without the card I'd never attain Platinum. After hearing about metadata collection techniques, how can I find out if there are additional "unpublished" perks sent out by Caesars directly to people in my demographic, who (in theory) could obtain multiple tens of thousands of base reward credits, but only a couple thousand tier credits?
A:

[Editor's Note: We asked our travel-rewards expert, Mike Friedman, co-writer of our Travel Game blog, to comment on this question. Here's what he had to say.]

Truthfully, I can comment only on the credit card specifically, though I do have a few things to say on the program in general.

From what I know of Caesars, they're highly quantitative about how they do stuff. They don't seem to view the credit card as a core revenue driver, but more to take advantage of cross-sell opportunities for existing customers. Overall, in fact, casinos (and cruise lines, for that matter) have done a poor job of integrating their credit cards into their loyalty programs.

In all of the years I've been covering this card, I've never heard of anyone getting any true unpublished perks. I have heard, on occasion, of people getting small multipliers (e.g., earn 2X points on your next $3,000 in spend), but there are no ways to count on those.

I guess that's a long way of saying that your questioner shouldn't expect any unpublished perks related to his ownership of the credit card.

Thank you, Mike. Now it's time to hear from anyone out there in QoDland who can comment on the integration, or lack thereof, of the Caesars Rewards credit card with the Total Rewards players club.

What unpublished perks does Caesars Entertainment offer players with a lot of credit-card points but not so many players club tier credits?

    Caesars perks
I'll chime in though I usually attain Diamond status via my play. I do not have a casino company credit card.

I hope you applied for your card during a specific promotion, e.g. being given Platinum card status. So right away you are on their radar for offers, email and snail mail. Free or discounted rooms (mid week, usually), maybe shows. You might get a blast of good offers for a while.

If you can charge everything to the card, pay it off each month, thus earning a lot of TR points, that could be valuable for applying to rooms and food, etc. even if you don't maintain the Platinum tier.

Now, what they all do toward the end of the year (and recently through the year) is award "Bonus" Tier points, to encourage folks to stay loyal to the brand, try to attain a higher tier. You get an email 'congratulating' you if/when you earn Bonus points. This may be the "unpublished" perks you refer to. I have been surprised with "Bonus" points after playing at Laughlin. More later.

    Nothing extra
I've had the card since the days it was a Harrah's card. I don't use it much, but since it's a Visa card it's become the card I use when I buy at Costco, including gas, since they switched to Visa, and when places won't accept Discover, my main card. I have never noticed any 'unpublished' perks by using this card. If someone out there has I'd love to know.

Both my wife and I got the Caesar's Visa credit card for the bonus credits. If my memory is correct you had to charge $2500 in 90 days to get the bonus credit. We have not used the card since.

Why? We use a Southwest Airlines Visa credit so that we can get some free air fare trips for us and our kids. Example--for our 50th wedding anniversary we were able to fly 2 daughters, 2 son in laws and 2 grand kids to Cancun for a 5 night 4 day celebration. We have done several trips similar to this over the years with free air fare. Plan on a cruise in the near future. With no cost for air fare it makes for very inexpensive trip for all.

One thing to be aware of with the card. If you don't use it at least once every six months you will lose all your bonus points. This is my experience

    6 months
TR points expire in 6 months anyway if no players card activity. That is an advantage of having the Caesars credit card. Even if you don't use the card much, you can use it now and then to keep your TR points from expiring.

    Hidden Perk
Go to the Players Club in any Vegas Caesars Casino and ask for the list of BOGO shows. Depending on your level you can get BOGO or free tickets for any of the listed shows. I usually have enough points to pay for a show, so I get two tickets for nothing. The hitch is that this can be done only once a month. This is totally not advertised, and I have never been able to find the list of comped shows on line. The list has been known to change a little every month. if your stay in Vegas runs past the end of the month, you can use this perk twice in your stay.
