Question of the Day - 09 November 2021

Q:

Are there any chances or rumors that Caesars would sell the World Series of Poker? Perhaps to someone who would want to do a better job of it? (There are a lot of computer and dealer staffing issues this year.)

A:

Caesars Entertainment, as we predicted, didn't deign to answer your question, but we still asked. And we couldn't even begin to put a dollar value on the World Series of Poker.

While everything in the gaming world is theoretically for sale at any given time, Caesars’ high-profile association with and aggressive promotion of the WSOP make us skeptical that the company would part with such an asset. CZR presently holds 101 WSOP-branded events, not only the titular tourney in Las Vegas, but also across the U.S. and around the world.

The main reason Harrah's (at the time) purchased the insolvent Binion’s Horseshoe in 2004 was to own the WSOP; it quickly flipped the hotel-casino. Under Caesars’ energetic auspices, the WSOP not only moved to the Rio, but developed the World Series of Poker Circuit, a promotional set of events held at Caesars-owned casinos throughout the U.S. This 2005 innovation was followed two years later by the World Series of Poker Europe, designed to capitalize on Caesars-owned casinos in London and Egypt. Since Caesars recently divested itself of these properties, the future of WSOPE remains to be seen.

Subsequent extensions included World Series of Poker Africa (2010), World Series of Poker Asia Pacific (2013), 2015’s World Series of Poker International Circuit (Canada, Latin America, the Caribbean, Europe, Asia-Pacific and Africa), and inevitably World Series of Poker Online in 2020. Plus, the WSOP enjoys a lucrative new relationship with CBS Sports Networks, which means we’re talking a pretty rich pot. So it would be quite a job to unwind the various WSOPs from the Roman Empire.

As for the computer and dealer issues to which you refer, we take a somewhat pessimistic view, given the corner-cutting reputation of Caesars’ new management, which comes over from Eldorado Resorts.

    Pity...
...but yeah, they won't let it go, and they'll continue to run it in their trademark shitty way: high high high prices, rotten customer service, and penny-pinching at every turn.

The rake at the WSOP is atrocious. It's a terrible value to play there. Who needs it? May the fleas of a thousand camels infest CZR's underwear.

    Dealer issues
Aren’t the dealer issues primarily due to Covid?

    I gave up on Caesars
CZR's new management loves to brag to Wall Street how they cut costs mostly in offering fewer comps and less service to players. And yet people still play there.

    Harrah's touch of chintz
Anyone that was around Caesars Palace before and after Harrah's bought it in 2005 knows what a debacle that was. Harrah's managed to transform a prestigious, high-class resort into something very much hollowed out. Long time Caesars customers quickly noticed the negative trend in everything, from customer service to paper napkins in the restaurants. Of course, the middle-class Harrah's patrons loved having more access to Caesars and thus it descended even more into being like a Harrah's type of place. I'm just a regular mid-class guy myself, places like Main St Station and Silverton are among my favorites. But I admire the 5 star qualities of places like Wynn/Encore, Venetian and Bellagio have. Caesars was once like that, but it changed once Harrah's tainted it. Harrah's even changed their corporate name to Caesars Entertainment to milk what they could out of the legendary Caesars Palace reputation. It's not a surprise that the WSOP is being run badly by clueless Harrah's management.

    All Hail Seizures
CZR management is dumb, but not dumb enough to sell the one asset worth keeping.

    Punctuation?
Dang, Patricia, a little punctuation would make your post much easier to read and understand.
