We’re planning a trip to Lake Tahoe next summer. Any chance the Cal Neva in Crystal Bay will be reopened by then?
In the old poker player’s parlance, the chances or that are slim to none. And Slim’s up at Tahoe.
That’s the bad news.
The good news is that you’ll have a better chance of staying and playing there in two summers, 2020. Work has started on the eventual restoration and reopening of the historic property on the north shore of Lake Tahoe; demolition crews have been tearing down the old cabins that have sat vacant for many years around the main hotel and casino building.
And according to our contacts in nearby Incline Village, the Cal Neva management team held a public meeting there recently concerning the future of the project.
Lawrence Investments, owned by Larry Ellison of Oracle fame and fortune (estimated at $60 billion these days), purchased the parcel out of bankruptcy last year; he owns a big lakefront mansion in the vicinity. Though no official plans or timetables have been revealed, the project team assured locals at the meeting that when the redevelopment is completed, Cal Neva will remain a lodge-casino.
The current work of removing the fire-prone cabins is being done at the behest of the North Lake Tahoe Fire District and that should be completed in the next month or two.
Look for further plans to be revealed when that phase of the Cal Neva reopening project is done. And when they are, we'll be on top of them. We've always loved the Cal Neva.
