Question of the Day - 28 March 2025

Q:

What would be the effects on Vegas if Canadian visitation dropped by, say, 20%? Or 50%? Or 99%?

A:

Canada is Las Vegas’ top source of international visitors. Canadian airports make up three of the top five international origins for Vegas visitation and five of the top eight.

The number of Canadians who visited Las Vegas in 2024 hasn't been released yet, but the Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority's estimate is 1.4 million. That's roughly the same number as in 2023, 1,419,050, and almost as high as 2019's at 1,480,000.

Now, it's true that a million and a half is a lot of people, roughly the population of Hawaii. So if 99% of Canadians stopped coming to Las Vegas, it would certainly have an impact.

That said, total visitation last year was just under 42 million, so 1.5 million accounts for 3-1/2% of the total. Take all the visitor spend and revenue figures and subtract 3.5% and it would certainly be a pain point, but not exactly crushing.

Indeed, Canadian visitation dropped to 155,000 in 2021, right around 10% of the current number, and Vegas did just fine in the year after the worst of the pandemic, with the casinos recording record profits.

How about Canadian visitation dropping by 50%? In today's figures, that would be a little less than 2% of the total. And 20% would be a around .5%. In other words, fractions.

So our opinion is that the effects would be if not quite minimal, then nominal at worst.

    They should avoid us
I for one wouldn't visit or vacation in a country whose leader had insulted us, tried to bully us, was trying to crush our economy because of some earlier perceived slight, and had babbled about annexing us. Who wants to go somewhere where you're belittled and degraded. Fork that!

Canadians have other vacay options, some of which have casinos: the Caribbean, Mexico...and there are plenty of places to visit in their own big, beautiful country. I don't expect Canadian visitation to Vegas to drop all that much, though, because they're nice people, and they must understand that the raving, evil idiot attacking their country doesn't represent the feelings of most Americans, his election victory notwithstanding.

So if you're Canadian, I hope you still want to come here and I personally want you to feel welcome. Just avoid anyone wearing a red baseball cap--they might want to annex you.

    Well said, Kevin!

    Canadians
My husband and I have met many Canadians on our visits to Las Vegas and always always always have had the best time gambling and talking with them. I thoroughly understand why the current political situation would deter their visits, and am a little saddened by it.

I grew up in Detroit and had relatives in Toronto and Windsor. Almost every Canadian I have ever met are very good people. A little left of my preferences, but still great folks. Why they are going after Canada with these tariffs is the one I do not understand. Equalize tariffs, eye for an eye on tariffs, I can understand, but the rest of it is beyond me. Mexico, China, Russia, some of the EU, I understand. But not Canada. I still hope they come to Vegas. Regardless of what is going on politically, Vegas is still a blast, and welcomes Canadians with open arms. One thing is equal in Vegas, and that is lightening of ones wallet, no matter where you are from.

Once again Kevin's TDS shines through. Thought that political views weren't allowed here.

    From Canada
It is heart warming to read the nice comments about us Canadians. I hope most Americans share these feelings. We have no beef with the US citizens, but the president's attacks on us, really? We are friends, not enemies. Take care all, hope all this passes soon. See you in Vegas in May.

You can be a bit much at times. But your right on here. Thanks for saying it and thanks to LVA for allowing it to be said.

    Kevin, et al
Canada is looking for people just like you to immigrate. The weather is great (this time of year).

We knew that this question opened the door for some political discussion, but we wanted to take the opportunity to shine a light on the Canadian-visitation effect. Since we opened that door, we'll be a bit more tolerant of those compelled to go in a political direction, but let's keep it civil and in bounds. If you want to know what that means, “raving evil idiot" gets about as close to that line as I'm comfortable getting.

  • O2bnVegas Mar-28-2025
    Civilized
I can't explain it well, can't describe it well. My sister lives in Canada so I have visited there. I felt the 'atmosphere' as one of simplicity, as in polite, laid back, a certain calmness, less "keeping up with the Jones's, less characterizing of life as all bad depending on your personal problems.

I'll never forget having to take our dad to the ER while visiting there. He had some uncomfortable heart irregularities. His insurance wouldn't apply, Medicare wouldn't apply. In the ER he got an hours long full work up, extremely kind friendly staff. Us siblings had agreed to pool our resources to pay what we thought would be an enormous sum. Went to check out, $120 for all that great care! P.S. We were rock stars with our southern accesnts. Lol.

    Candy's Take
So good to see this type of comment, as opposed to angry vitriol on either side. Thanks for that.

Tariffs are a Wake -Up Call
The current situation with Canada and Canadians is temporary. The newly enacted American tariffs are there in order to have Canada stop the fentanyl and illegals that are coming to the U.S.from Canada -and- has illustrated the current disparity of the tariffs being implemented by each country. All President Trump wants is "reciprocal" tariffs of like amounts on goods being exported and imported by each nation. --- Today --- President Donald Trump announced Friday that he had a “very productive” first conversation with newly elected Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney, signaling early cooperation between the neighboring leaders.-- This issue of tariffs will be resolved in a fair manner and afterwards Canadians will return to Vegas.

Well said Mr. Miller. Too bad Kevin will never understand it. All he cares about is, well, we all know that already.

Kevin had his say. David had his say. It's even. Kevin responded to David and that can result in nothing good as far as relevant QoD commentary is concerned, so it's been taken down. If anyone wants to continue the political argument, take it to the Sink. I think it’s fair to say that Las Vegas very much values Canadian patronage. I know that LVA does.

  • Kevin Lewis Mar-28-2025
    Fine
I agree that responding to David Miller in any way, shape or form is a mistake, and I shouldn't do it. My apologies.

Come to Vegas, maple leaf people! We even have a hockey team.

  • John Dulley Mar-28-2025
    Not just Canadians
The QOD is specific to Canada but there sure seems to be a lot of talk coming from Europe about travel cancellations and people deciding not to visit America in general not just Vegas..

it is interesting to see how a nations politics can cause harm to another country such as not allowing people in for poor excuse am not sure if any one from Canada has been rejected or not but hope not but i have never been to canada but the ones i have talked with i enjoyed the chat about the differences between us what well be will bw i gues

    Not much as you noted
I have a number of Canadian guests that visit my VRBO/airbnb units at the signature regularly and they continue to book with me. The political commentary is totally unnecessary. I see insults going both directions and our national anthem being booed at hockey games but people need to chill the hell out and recognize that by and large these have been our friends long-term and we'll continue to be. Leave your political commentary for another venue where someone is logging into hear it.

  • sunny78 Mar-28-2025
    my goodness
So now we can talk about politics again?

You are sending mixed message on politics would be an understatement. You go from I'll "burn" down even a hint of politics mentioned. To ignore it. To now it's good if it's "even steven" and LVA now starts political talk, it's good! And you want your customer base here on QOD to stay away from politics in any form yet your own business brings up the political element and hey, it's all good now???

For me, I can add to this political nonsense But I won't. I can get my fill and more on social media and beyond. One final point....I'm very disappointed in LVA to perpetuate and bring on this nonsense that many of us like to escape from even in small part to places like LVA that should be gambling and things las vegas, right? But that seems impossible ANYWHERE.

    Sad.

Disappoint in you LVA. Your take on this matter is wishy washy, weak, and confusing. Take a side and go with it would be sound advice but we've been here again, and again, and again.

    I won’t be back
I am Canadian. I have spent a large chunk of my life visiting Vegas, writing about Vegas, promoting Vegas, running a forum and a Facebook group about Vegas etc. Sadly I will not cross into the States while this current administration is in place. The treatment of Canada is totally uncalled for and consists of a bunch of lies. We will never be a part of the U.S. and it is insulting to claim it would be beneficial for us. It would not. It is not happening.

Why would you want to visit the US and spend money here anyways now, las vegas or otherwise? Have you seen the CN vs US Dollar exchange rate, you're about 30% in the hole at the gate:

    https://www.xe.com/currencyconverter/convert/?Amount=1&From=CAD&To=USD

I have Canadian friends who spend time here in the winter weather. Most aren't as uptight as you and realize the drama/negotiations aspect of it, some laugh at it frankly, and don't take it at all serious. They will continue to winter here, live in the homes they bought, all good.

Since politics is allowed now in conversation here at LVA, given I'm sure you are also insulted on the talk of tariffs and such, were you upset when tariffs in 2024 by the last admin for example raised tariffs on your lumber into our nation, almost doubled?

I bet you weren't. Nice, huh? In any case, gambling in CN sounds smart imho with the exchange rate where it is. Best to you.

    I like visiting Canada.

    Oh Canada!
I have only spent a few days in Canada in my life--a Boy Scout trip in 1976, and a convention in Toronto around 2008. I would not blame any Canadian for delaying a trip to the US. But if you do come, and want to visit South Carolina, let me know and I will be glad to point you to some of my favorite places. I respect your sovereignty--and Greenland's--and Panama's. None of those will ever be a part of the United States.
