Question of the Day - 07 September 2021

Q:

Whatever happened to Carl "Safe Sax" Ferris? We used to love watching him perform on Fremont Street.

A:

On August 10, Scott Roeben's VitalVegas.com blog reported that Carl “Safe Sax” Ferris, "won’t return to performing at the famed pedestrian mall in downtown Las Vegas." Ferris told Roeben that he's "moving on to new projects."

Ferris was a perennially popular performer who stood on the back of a truck that, it turns out, was owned by Fremont Street Experience, to play to the crowds on Fremont Street up to six nights a week.

Roeben also writes, "It’s a little-known fact, but Carl Ferris was under contract with Fremont Street Experience for $1 a year. Ferris made a good living from tips and hawking his CDs."

Scott believes that Ferris was a victim of the evolution of Fremont Street. "The venue recently got a $32 million upgrade to its Viva Vision screen, and given all the other programming, Ferris’ sax playing was probably deemed to no longer be a good fit."

So there you have it. A lot of people will miss his solos and engaging performances downtown. We know we will.

    Not a good fit?
I find that hard to believe.

Sure, the songs he played were relatively unknown / obscure, but they were far my pleasing to the ear than some idiot banging on some pickle buckets.

Bring him back! Even if you gotta double his salary, bring him back!

    Agree
I'm far from being a prude, but I gotta agree with Dave.
With all the disgusting, pointless, profanity rampant on the street, Carl Ferris was a breath of fresh air.

No longer a good fit is right! We'll miss you Carl.
He was one of the few left with actual talent. He’s no longer a good fit because he’s not a homeless crack addict or a disgusting loser asking for a handout. The “talent” on Fremont now seems to consist of letting your boobs or balls hang out & asking for a “tip”.(And what’s with the guy in the pickle suit?) I’m one of the biggest fans of downtown but that enthusiasm is waning big time after my last few trips. I visit Las Vegas at least twice a year and ALWAYS stay downtown. It’s been so entertaining to stroll up & down Fremont taking in the light show or watching various talents like Carl perform, all while getting a chuckle spotting the occasional freak. I wonder if the Fremont “suits” have even been out on Fremont after dark lately. It’s getting worse by the day. I barely even feel safe anymore. If I’m on Fremont, it’s to walk, briskly, between casinos, breathing as little as possible so as not to be assaulted by the smell of straight weed or someone who hasn't showered in a month.

    times have changed
For better or for worse, it's a different world overall, and a different generation taking over, and that sax player guy just isn't part of what this generation wants. EDM and DJ's have taken over. Frankly surprised classic rock and such is still being played and that everything isn't a DJ now playing EDM. And fremont street has changed no doubt to reflect it all. Can't say I feel unsafe down there but it certainly is different over the years. Some of the casinos have an old classic feel I like but personally I like the feel of the place better some years ago but life goes on is how I look at it. Like anything in life, for myself, I'm thankful to have experienced what once was if I enjoyed that and realize nothing stays the same, is forever, is how I look at it.
