Question of the Day - 31 July 2018

Q:

I’ve been going to Vegas for 50 years now, but I don’t know the answer to this question: Can I get cash via a credit card at any casino? I’ve just brought cash, but that doesn’t seem safe.

A:

Yes, you can get cash from a credit card at casinos around the world. You do so at the casino cashier's cage or at an ATM kiosk. Of course, you'll pay some hefty fees: the cash-advance fee, a higher interest rate than on purchases (and it's collected from the nanosecond you get the cash, not tacked on at the beginning of your next billing cycle), and whatever the casino takes.

The alternatives are a lot less expensive.

At the casino, you can set up check-cashing privileges or a line of credit; you can also do an EFT or wire-transfer of your money directly into the cage (though you’ll pay your bank’s fee to do so).

If you have an account at a national bank with branches in Las Vegas, you can also cash a check or use the ATM for free there. You’ll still have to carry the cash between the bank and your hotel (where you can stash it in your room safe or in a safe at the cage), but it will avoid all the casino-credit machinations and fees, the ATM cash-advance fees and interest rate at a casino kiosk, and wire-transfer fees.

    Money Woes
We always carry cash, too, but one year my husband decided we should carry traveler's checks. The bank talked him into money orders, which NO ONE in Vegas would cash.

    What?
Money orders are very easy to cash at any casino cage.

    Money in Vegas
I go once a year, 8 days each time. I bring enough cash for tips, some food (I mostly use TR credits and eat at CET properties) and incidentals and a day or two of gambling allotment. The rest of the time I use my ATM card to get my daily allotment. If I have a winning day(s) that goes towards future daily allotments (I bring envelopes). My bank reimburses me for the ATM fees but if the writer's bank doesn't it's still cheaper than credit card fees. I also bring a check to cash at the cage when my luck has run dry and I'm a bit desperate for more cash.

    Casino cash
If you have a driver's license and a major credit card, any casino cage will cash a personal check. No fees.

    Bypass ATM fees.
I have casino credit set up at the MSS. I ask for a marker and they bring chips right to my table. I sign for it.If I'm winning, they
will ask if I can pay back the marker. I usually do.
    No fees.

    Casino Credit
Establish a line of credit - most casino's will accept a minimum of $2500. Sign for the marker at the table, pay any balance due at the end of the trip or within 10 business days (check or cash). Interest free.

    Safety
Aside from being robbed at gunpoint, the cash advance fees are only slightly-less scary. NEVER do this! LVA's response and these comments are much better options and very safe.

    Credit Unions
Most Credit Unions belong to a shared branch program where you can deposit and withdraw as well as use the ATM fee free.

    Never
Don't do it! The fees and interest keep running like a taxi meter. I did it once when I was younger and dumber, thought I MIGHT run out of cash (which I didn't). I called the cc company to ask why I was still seeing charges several statements after I'd paid in full for that month. It is a whole different deal.

    Get a line of credit
If you usually take about the same amount of money in cash and frequent the same hotel, a line of credit is the way to go because it is merely a check cashing privilege. If you don’t usually stay at the same hotel, you can always take your cash to the cage and deposit it there and then you can take markers at the tables (just as you would usually buy in with cash) against the total amount too. Applying for credit is easy and it’s not like a loan, they don’t check your credit, but only ask your bank your average balance in the checking account you designate to ensure they’ll get paid back.

    Foolproof strategy
Bring a small amount of cash with you initially. Win. Keep winning. Then you should never need to get cash, from your credit card or otherwise. So simple!

  • VegasROX Jul-31-2018
    Hmmmm...
I don't know of any casino, when you apply for credit with them, that doesn't check your credit rating before approving your line of credit. Checks, travelers checks and markers all work. If you decide to use an atm, do not use on in a casino. That is legalized robbery of your funds!!

    Some Free ATMs
I'm not sure how old this site is, but it gives locations for free ATMs on the strip: http://www.travelvegas.com/blog/free-and-cheap-atms-in-las-vegas/

    FreeATMs
While it's true that these ATMs don't charge a fee, your bank fees will still apply.
