Question of the Day - 17 August 2021

Q:

Are there any specials from the casinos these days on your birthday?

A:

This is a fairly frequently asked question about a promotion that used to be a lot more common than it is today and the lack thereof has little to do with the pandemic. Birthday comps have been slowly disappearing for many years; we figured the pandemic was another nail in their coffin. Thus, higher priorities have precluded our devoting limited assets to tracking down the few that might remain to answer this question.

But then, another website, VegasChanges.com, did this work recently (accurate as of July 18), saying "several weeks" were invested in coming up with "The Ultimate Guide for Birthday Freebies in Las Vegas." We believe it; comprising more than 100 birthday-month deals, it was obviously a big job.

The vast majority of birthday specials VegasChanges found were at national brands: Applebee's, Auntie Anne's Pretzels, Baja Fresh, Baskin-Robbins, Black Bear Diner, Buffalo Wild Wings, Chick-Fil-A, Chili's, Chipotle, Cinnabon, Cracker Barrel, Dairy Queen, Dave & Buster's, Del Taco, Denny's, Dickie's Barbecue Pit, Dunkin' Donuts, and the like continuing with E (Earl of Sandwich, Einstein Brothers, El Pollo Loco) and running right through Y (Yard House and Yogurtland).

A number of the brands have locations at Vegas casinos, but for our purposes, we're interested only in promos offered by casino outlets that you can't get anywhere else. And sure enough, out of more than 100 birthday offers, only five fit our criteria.

A BOGO entree at Binion's Cafe and Magnolia's at the Four Queens.

A free appetizer or half-price drink at Hexx at Paris when you buy an entree.

A free non-alcoholic shake at Holsteins at the Cosmopolitan.

And a $150/$300 dining credit for upper-tier members of Wynn Rewards.

Even if VegasChanges missed a few, it would still be a pretty paltry output compared to past proffers, we'd say. But it does support our contention that our limited labor resources are better dedicated to other tasks.

Still, as VegasChanges notes, some of the deals at the chains are quite generous, such as the two free meals at Black Bear (one for signing up, the other on your birthday), 10 free wings at Hooters, and $30 off a $60+ bill at Benihana. So it's worth your while to check the list for any near you that you might be interested in.

And if you're aware of any other birthday promos at Vegas casinos that aren't available all over the country, please let us and everyone else know in the comment boxes.

    Check your players card
No matter what lever when it gets close to your birthday and see if there is some special comp on your birthday.

One casino I know of has a birthday party for all club members born in a month usually on a mid month weekend.

    Mlife freeplay
Mlife resorts will give me $30 extra Freeplay in the month of, if I'm staying there.

    mLife
mLife (any property?) gives some Free Play for your birthday month if you book a stay. Usually mentioned in the offer. This is in addition to whatever Free Play comes with the offer. Might be just the higher tiers, not sure about that.

I suggest even if you just drop in to play at an mLife casino, go to Players Club, ask if you are eligible for birthday Free Play. Of course it requires that you are signed up in their Players Club.

    Saltgrass
I understand that Saltgrass restaurant has opened at Golden Nugget. Sign up for their rebate program which is quite good (you get enough points for a free? meal pretty quickly), and includes a free (?) meal in your birthday month.

Like many places, Saltgrass trimmed their menu when re-opening after the pandemic closure. Specifically for me their brisket tacos. I talked to a manager, he said they'd had many requests for these and hope to get them back soon.

For now, I highly recommend the Baby Back Ribs. A whole rack is plenty for two +. For entrees you get two sides and a salad. Wedge salad is available as the salad option, a dollar or two extra. Fried mushrooms appetizer are delish. They have a discounted menu from noon to 6 PM in my city when you can get the half rack of BB ribs as your entree. I can't speak for the Saltgrass in Vegas, haven't been there yet.

    Ask always
At all those places mentioned in the response to the question you have to tell them it is your birthday/birthday month. Regardless, everywhere you eat, mention you are celebrating your birthday. You'll often get a free (surprise of course) dessert or cupcake or something.

Hosts can give you birthday Free Play or comp a meal or something, if they are of a mind to (if management allows it). So always let your Host know you are there for your birthday. If you don't have a Host, ask at the players club if they have a birhday promo for you.

    MLIFE Still Gives
My last visit to Vegas (April 2021) I received $100 in Birthday free play at the MLife desk and my birthday wasn't until the next month. Not only that, but I never even asked about it. The Mlife associate asked if I would be visiting in May. When I told her not likely due to the 8 hr plane ride. She gave it to me early. Then again, I'm platinum and I was putting a LOT of tier credits on my account. But yes, if you're an Mlife member and you're staying at one of their properties, go to the Mlife desk and ask if you have any Birthday free play. It never hurts to ask, or even not! ;-)

    Resorts World
You may haven't gotten to it yet, but in a Resorts World trip report I sent you recently, I noted that they offered me a spin promotion for my birthday. It ended up with points worth $5.

As I noted in the report, finding someone that actually knew how to redeem the birthday offer was quite an adventure...

    Additional Wynn Freebee
Wynn also advertises free gaming credit during your birthday month for the higher tiers. The amount is dependent on your level of prior play.

    Mlife freeplay
You can bypass the Mlife desk and go to the Kiosk and select your birthday freeplay. I'll be going to Beau Rivage in Sept. They usually give you freeplay the first 15 days and then the next 15 days. My trip is overlapping that time frame so I will free play for the first half of my trip and the last half plus my birthday free play! $375.00 in free play sounds good to me!
