Question of the Day - 15 September 2017

Q:

Car rentals have increased quite a bit in the last few years and I'm wondering if a person would be better off avoiding the Central Auto Rental at the airport and at least save the airport/bus fees added to the bill. Maybe some outlying or casino locations might save some money. What do the locals do about rental cars?

A:

By not renting a car at the airport, you’ll save the airport concession recovery fee of 10%. You also won’t have to pay the consumer facility fee of $4 per day. You’ll still have to pay Nevada sales tax for car rentals at 8.25%, the Clark County rental tax of 2%, and a state government surcharge of 10%. But even for only a two- or three-day rental, those fees can add up to $20-$30; for a weekly rental, more like $50-$60.

Luckily, it’s not difficult to rent a car in an off-airport location. You might pay more for the car (though you might not), and unless someone picks you up, you'll have to pay for transportation between the airport and hotel or rental-car agency. But you’ll definitely save on the airport taxes.

Here’s how it breaks down (no pun intended) among the Las Vegas casinos that provide rental-car availability:

Advantage: Gold Coast, Main Street Station, The Orleans, Red Rock Resort (via concierge desk), Suncoast

Avis: Aria, Bellagio, Circus Circus, Delano, Excalibur, Four Queens, Luxor, Mandalay Bay, MGM Grand, The Mirage, Monte Carlo, New York-New York, Palazzo, Venetian

Budget: Golden Nugget, Stratosphere

Dollar: Treasure Island

Enterprise: The D, Green Valley Ranch (via concierge desk), SLS , Tropicana

Hertz: Bally’s Las Vegas, Caesars Palace, Cosmopolitan, Encore, Flamingo, Hard Rock, Harrah’s, Palms, Paris, Planet Hollywood, Plaza, Rio, Riviera, Westgate Las Vegas, Wynn

Verve: Red Rock Resort (via concierge desk)

In the cases of Green Valley Ranch and Red Rock Resort, each hotel receives a quota of rental cars from its provider(s), which it then subleases to hotel guests.

The locals use any number of satellite locations for rental-car agencies. Just google your preferred agency and try to get as close to the airport as possible.

    Things to Consider
    1. Off-airport locations aren't continuously staffed like airport locations. If your flight is severely delayed you may get to the off-airport location to find it has closed and everyone has gone home.

    2. Sometimes you can rent at off-airport and return to the airport for no extra charge. Ask when you rent as this will save you the cost of a ride back to the airport.

    3. I've rented off-aiport in Florida but never in Vegas. It has been my experience that even without the airport taxes the off-airport locations' prices don't justify the added inconvenience.

    Car Rentals
I find that the prices at hotels are high. I have found the best prices at non airport locations that are stand alone and not in a hotel.

Limited Service and Hours of Operation
Be aware that some, if not all, casino locations are sparsely staffed and not open 24 hours.

    Hotel car rental
Super of LVA to break this down by rental company and hotel!

Suggestion: Before you go check online for the advertised "specials". Confirm it is applicable for pick up at your hotel (or even a hotel close to yours), and reserve it right then. When we walked up to rent at Bellagio (about 9 in the morning), they didn't have a car available yet, we'd have to wait. Had we reserved it ahead it time it would have been ready (or so the lady said...who can say for sure). Walked over to Caesars and they had a car available, but the online special didn't apply to the walk-up rate.

    Rental
Because I don't like to drive when I'm on vacation I usually don't rent a car. However, I twice have done a one-day rental, once to drive out to Red Rock Canyon and once to go to Mount Charleston. Both times I got the car at TI, where I was staying anyway. I found it very convenient. Both times I used a discount code I got off the LVA forums and paid the same price as I would have at any other location. So for a one-day getaway I would definitely recommend considering a hotel location rental, especially if you're staying at the same hotel.
