Question of the Day - 01 June 2020

Q:

Will masks be mandatory when the casinos reopen?

A:

As far as we know so far, the answer is no. In most of the reopening statements we've seen, masks are "strongly encouraged" and will be available to hotel-casino customers on request, but they won't be required, at least not as mandated by the state.

The Wynn/Encore, MGM, Caesars Entertainment, and the Venetian have announced that all employees will be required to wear masks at all times. This will probably be the policy at most hotel-casinos with more than 200 rooms, according to the Gaming Control Board.

That's Las Vegas, where the intense competition, especially after all the casinos will have been closed for a 78-day eternity, might preclude any from mandating masks for customers. On the other hand, some casinos might want to distinguish themselves by taking the opposite tack, in order to attract customers who would prefer that everyone wear face coverings. We'll see.

Elsewhere in Casinoland, especially at tribal casinos, masks are mandatory. For example, at the couple dozen Chickasaw casinos that are already open in Oklahoma, customers must all wear face coverings. In Michigan, Soaring Eagle Casino in Mount Pleasant and Saganing Eagles Landing Casino near Standish require face masks. Coeur d’Alene Casino in Idaho, Chinook Winds in Oregon, Muckleshoot Casino in Washington -- the list is long of tribal casinos that require masks and, therefore, prohibit smoking.

But at the commercial casinos that opened on Mississippi's Gulf Coast for Memorial Day weekend, like Nevada, masks are recommended and available, but optional.

QoDers are certainly welcome to weigh in here on masks in casinos. Or you can save your comments for Wednesday's poll preview; the next poll will also be on the mask issue.

    Straws etc
I wonder if casinos will put straws in the comp drinks now so patrons can drink with their masks on. So many people sit at slots while smoking and drinking I wonder if they'll put little holes in their masks to still do that. Anybody taking bets on mask usage?

    Iowa
Some Iowa casinos open today. We were told that masks were not going to be mandatory. We'll find out what's the mask culture when we drive out next Sunday.

    20%
Obviously, I understand that the Las Vegas visitor is different than the locals. But I can tell you that given the culture and heat here (I'm a local) I see less than 20% of people using masks, might be closer to 10%. I see little reason why it would be drastically different than that for visitors; if anything it will be lower since people are not used to wearing masks in high temps and that's easier said than done.

But, really, thinking of masks is not necessarily the right question. My concern would be all of the surfaces inside of a casino. Without realizing it, you touch *a lot* things like railings, countertops, etc that can all contain germs. A mask is the least of your issues within a casino.

    No Masks in Miss.
My brother in law is visiting HARRAHS in Biloxi for three days and reports that there is an alarmingly few number of patrons wearing masks.

    No thanks!!!
The virus can be carried as far as fifty yards on pigarette smoke. Enough people in the joint, SOMEBODY will be spewing lethal virus clouds for everyone to inhale! Only an idiot would go anywhere near such a place!

    we escaped it?
We were in Vegas March 4-10. No masks, no distancing, no extra disinfection instituted yet. We were also there at Christmas, when the virus was also very possibly circulating.

Now casinos will be 1) taking temps at entrances; 2) structuring for distancing; 3) employing cleaning measures far beyond that previously done; 4) employees will wear masks; 5)many players will be wearing masks (though some won't wear them correctly).

So, what are the odds of being exposed to the virus in a Vegas casino now? I think a lot better (the good way) than before, with or without masks. JMHO.

    Positively No Mask for Me
If I must wear a mask in "The D" casino, I will cancel my summer trip which I already reduced from 14 weeks to 10 weeks.

    Masks & More
The reason to wear a mask is to protect others from your breath droplets. Unfortunately, there are too many uncaring individuals out and about. They wander aimlessly the wrong way down the aisles of grocery stores without masks, but I am betting on casinos being better at controlling social distancing. I'm not convinced that smoke will carry the droplets 50 yards, but I'm sure that it does exacerbate the spread of infected droplets. I, for one, like to drink a good beer while I play video poker. That is something that I'm going to be thinking long and hard on before going back in to a casino. I haven't been able to think of a way to keep a mask on while drinking anything and that includes straws. With the restaurants open to the gaming floor, I believe eating in a casino could be a little iffy also. Living in self isolation will eventually get to the point of not being worth it. Only going to a grocery store once a week or so, and no where else, is starting to get very old!

    Free masks included
When will the Resort Fees be updated to include free masks? How many rewards points for a c - 19 test?

  • Texas Transplant Jun-01-2020
    Definitely will wear a mask
I am in a high risk group and wear an N95 surgical, or an N100 hazardous material mask everywhere I go. While a lot of other people, including some doctors don't like to wear a surgical mask because they may feel claustrophobic, it doesn't bother me for up to a couple of hours.

Wonder if some casino executive, (most likely at the MGM) will break new ground and try to charge a new "mask/disinfection surcharge" and try to get visitors to pay it?

    Masks' purpose
It has been said that the purpose of face masks is to inhibit other people's getting infected by the mask-wearer. For me, the reason is so that I won't infected by anyone else. I'm not worried about infecting other people; as far as I know, I don't have the virus, and I don't do behaviors (such as coughing into other people's faces or really close to them) that would infect them. No need to argue about this. Just realize that you can't stop all people from getting super-close to you, so you should wear a mask for self-protection. Thus, those 80% of folks who aren't wearing masks in casinos are just being foolish. And say you're sitting at the end machine in a row of machines; people will walk by and be right next to you as they pass you on your side. A person might unintentionally turn his/her head in your direction to look down the aisle and their breath will go in your direction. You can't stop this. So we need to wear masks everywhere in casinos.

    yes
Was lucky enough to win one of Derek Steven's flights to LV on Thursday and you can be sure I'll wear a mask everywhere except when I'm eating. When I see the the waitress approach I'll hold it up to face. It's what the CDC recommends as the right thing to do, and sends the right message to others that I care for their health: remember why we're supposed to wear one!

    AZGambler
The 4 Native American casinos that opened in the Phoenix area on May 15th including Harrahs do not require masks for guests. I do not believe the scare tactics. I've visited 2 of the 3 locations of the Gila River Casinos and I'm not alone. About 60-65% of guests were not wearing masks. Most of the other casinos in AZ are opening on the 3rd and will be requiring them. I'll be at Gila
    River.

    It's not just masks
You should also be wearing examination gloves (like Doctors do)for all of those surfaces, chips, and cards you will be touching. Masks are for protecting you from getting the virus as well as protecting others from you giving others the virus but most people writing here are going to contribute to the 1 Million dead before this is over. 20 Million is predicted, mostly those in the 16 t0 60 age groups. Enjoy your laughing this pandemic off just like Trump did when the CDC warned him it was coming way back in 2019.

Cool it. Don't give those gougers any ideas. I'm sure they will think of Corona gouges all by themselves.

    San Diego-Masks Required
From the tribal casinos that have reopened in San Diego, and posted on their websites as guidelines and requirements for guests...all will need to be wearing masks to be allowed entry into the casinos......(Viejas, Jamul, Sycuan, Barona, Valley View, Harrah's SoCal resort..)... Pechanga - super resort/gigantic casino set to open June 1. Barona was recently, but the others had re-opened as early as May 18.
