Question of the Day - 04 April 2021

Q:

With this Covid situation, are hotel-casinos still giving out coupon books when you check in? I've saved a lot of money over the years with these books, particularly at the Four Queens and Binion's.

A:

We focused on downtown, since coupons are so far beneath the dignity of the fancy Strip resorts that we didn't want to insult them by inquiring.

“When you book it directly through us, it’s part of your package,” said a cheerful Four Queens front-desk attendant, who added that the same is true for Binion’s Gambling Hall.

The Golden Nugget sells coupon books, but does not give them away unless it's part of a larger promotion or comped stay.

Boyd Gaming, which operates three downtown casinos, does not. “While we do send targeted offers to customers, we don’t do the coupon books you referenced,” says company spokesman David Strow. “I don’t think that is something new for us, as I cannot recall when we last issued coupon books like that.”

Station Casinos spokesman Alex Acuna adds, “in general, no, we don't have coupon books. Offers are mailed to our guests in their rewards mailer.”

As for Circa, The D, and the Golden Gate, Derek Stevens’ spokeswoman answered our query with a flat “No.”

Ditto Casino Royale, the quintessential low-roller joint on the Strip.

Coupon books used to be offered at Circus Circus and Treasure Island, but no longer.

Half off buffet..a couple of free drink coupons..10 percent off delmar... free soup at big sur... free margarita at baja Miguel's and several others they do have some stipulations as always read the small print. Overall it is a very good coupon book.

    They were called Fun Books
Two days late, I replied to comments made by Anthony Curtis & Kevin Lewis to a comment I made in the QoD of 4/2/21 (Fri.). I hope it's okay to post this heads-up here so they might see it.

As for coupon books, they used to be called "Fun Books." Fun Books were ubiquitous on the Strip before its upscaling. Actually, it's news to me that they have disappeared, since I haven't been on the Strip in a long time. Most Fun Book coupons had little value, but often there were a couple that did have worth such as a two-for-one buffet or low denomination ($1-$5) match plays.

Fun Books were always free and were frequently handed out as people exited a casino, were given at check-in, were on the desk in your room, or you could always ask for them at the reception desk or a player's club booth.

I found the term "Fun Book" cringeworthy, and I was always too embarrassed to ask, "Could I have a Fun Book, please?" so I would enlist my traveling companion to ask for me. She had no shame.

    coupons
used to be common on strip but slowly went away, guess if they hadn't covid would have killed them. Excal always had a couple of good ones for Krispy Kreme

    Palace Station
We received a coupon book when we stayed in February. Can't remember for what, but Charcoal Room was discount included.

    I remember..
The Orleans used to have a fairly descent coupon book, but right now the only coupon books worth any thing are the Soutpoint and the mother of all coupon books, The Las Vegas advisor Membership Rewards coupon Book, it's packed with great value (oh that reminds me, got to get mine for my next Vegas Trip), and this is not a paid advertisement it really is a great value!

    SouthPoint
I'm a local so I don't stay at hotels but friends came in town for one night only and gave me their fun books for SouthPoint. Didn't use them but looked through them, and I thought it was very good stuff. Sitting at the VP bars at SP several times weekly, I can tell you that people use them and the bartenders are generous and happy to honor the coupons.

    Humans love freebies
People love anything "free." When they smiled and handed you the "fun book" with your room key it felt like starting out a winner already. Even when little if anything in it was of interest, it was fun to flip through to see if "the juice was worth the squeeze", like a free keychain you had to walk a mile and buy something else to qualify for.

    Boyd
We have been loyal Boyd property guests for many years and wonder why they are suddenly too good for coupon books - we always enjoyed one or two items in them and have decided to tank the generous tier privileges too. As a stockholder, I appreciate the growth, but I am getting better offers from other properties and I am casting around for more generous places to sleep and play.

    Fun
I could write a whole blog on this, I guess. 35 years of using "fun books" probably made us hundreds of dollars, maybe even thousands. Our bread-and-butter for the first years since we were just quarter players and coupons made up a big percentage of our advantage. Embarrassed my daughter by rummaging through the trash at the "Ho" for mini-breakfasts ones. One of the best ones was Palace Station, hitting the free Keno bet for some substantial wins. We used to walk miles every day to do the big matchplays at Tropicana. Our daily walk up and down the Strip and couponing made our exercise "profitable." I used to tip the maid at the Stardust and she would collect all the unused coupon books from checkouts and save them for us. Sometimes she would have a whole sack of them. Those are some of the best fun days in our memory!

    Sam's Town
I can't speak for all of Boyd, but I remember up til about a couple years ago, Sam's Town would give out coupons at checkin. It wasn't an actual 'book' but it was a sheet of I think around 8 coupons.

None of it was high value - it was just things like a free entree at Panda Express or a free drink at the bar and things along those lines. But still, it was nice to have.

I guess eliminating those was just another step towards the goal of completely alienating their low-roller base that they seem to be focused on lately.

Bowling, movie popcorn (small), and breakfast buffet, among others. I know someone who asked at the desk and was told you stay there, to get a coupon book.
