Along the lines of today's question about strip clubs in casinos, are casino owners allowed to get into the legal marijuana business? It is known that a Laughlin casino owner attempted to get a marijuana license, however, Gaming did not allow it. How can Gaming prevent a businessman from participating in a business that is legal in the state? Especially since it the business would not be in the casino.
Casino owners aren't allowed to have anything to do with marijuana, legal or not.
The Nevada Gaming Control Board has ruled that casino owners cannot dabble in the growing marijuana industry. Why not? Because a gaming license in Nevada is a privilege, not a right, and the Control Board has absolute authority to determine who gets one or not.
The Board has ruled that a clear hard line must be drawn between the casino and marijuana industries, because cannabis is still illegal at the federal level (and Attorney General Jeff Sessions keeps threatening to crack down on the states that have legalized it).
Casino owners haven't protested the edict. Why? They want to keep the feds off their backs, especially after having a run-in with Washington over insufficient money-laundering safeguards — a situation which was ultimately resolved to the feds’ satisfaction. But until anti-weed laws are taken off U.S. Congress’ books, marijuana will be no-go for Nevada casino owners.
