Did Station completely boycott the MRB for 2021?
As a matter of fact, they did -- Station absolutely and entirely opted out of this year's MRB.
Now, most of what Station had to offer in the past were deals on buffets. And obviously, those 2-for-1 discounts were taken out of the equation by the shutdown and pandemic restrictions. That said, when we asked if they'd like to participate in other ways or simply continue with their non-buffet offers, they said no. We suggested a simple 2-for-1 drink at each casino just to maintain a presence. They said no. As a last gasp, we mentioned a few creative room discounts we've been working on.
They said no.
Other aspects of that conversation can't -- or at least shouldn't -- be disclosed for various reasons, but the bottom line is, we gave Station Casinos every opportunity to remain involved in the Member Rewards Book and they flatly refused.
Are you wondering why? Here's our take on it.
The gambling win per customer throughout the pandemic has gone up. The casinos are currently catering to a larger percentage of hard-core gamblers who'll come in and play and damn the torpedoes -- which at this point ranges from much higher minimums than normal to the risk of contracting a potentially fatal virus. Not to mention customer service that kinda sucks in general, due both to mass layoffs (Las Vegas' unemployment rate is the worst of all large cities in the nation) and a noticeable lackadaisical or even resentful attitude up and down the ranks of managers and workers.
Of course, the casinos, especially the big corporations, like that higher win percentage (and smaller payroll) very much. Station is no exception.
But now, not only don't they want to give any of that back, they don't want to give anything back. Station's turning their backs on us is the least of it, even after a couple of decades of providing among the best discounts in the MRB. The bigger problem is that, taking a page out of the Strip casinos' playbook, they're turning their back on many of their customers as well.
It's not just Station, though after being one of the best in terms of customer satisfaction, they're now among the worst. It's all the casinos. Caesars is charging for parking again. Resort fees are going up (Paris, Planet Hollywood, and Cromwell are all increasing by $5 per night next week). Players clubs are pulling back on comps. Promotions are weaker. Games are tighter.
How long will this go on? Hard to say, but in the words of Jean Scott, "Changes in casino policies are rarely for the better." Once the casinos take a bite of some "forbidden fruit" (6-5 blackjack, triple-zero roulette, cutbacks in comps, and now, especially, tighter video poker schedules), they're loathe to undo what they've done. These changes, in our view, tend to be permanent or at least long-lasting.
If, after the pandemic subsides, pent-up demand for what Las Vegas and casinos nationwide have to offer spikes, that will only reinforce the longevity. But it works both ways, too. In the long run, will enough patrons who did without their Las Vegas/casino fix during the time of COVID conclude that they can do without it permanently? Or at least do without patronizing the casinos that have seriously cranked up the rip-and-tear factor, like Station?
What will you do?
